Hey, look, it's a new table for Zen Pinball for the Playstation 3! For $2.49, you can download Excalibur. And it's really good. These guys at Zen Studios know how to make a pinball game that keeps on giving.
The Excalibur table features a castle, a witch's cauldron, a battering ram, a Holy Grail, Knights of the Round Table, hidden passages, a jousting minigame, and an actual literal table. That spins. That'll wreak havoc on the seating order. A super-hot red-headed Guinevere presides over a ramp that leads you to a dueling area at the top of the table. Up there, you have to hit a target to make an enemy knight smack the ground with his mace, raising a little rubble ramp. Then you have to bounce the ball up the ramp to hit the knight, who's moving back and forth. Off to the right, a goofy Merlin doll waves his staff up and down, occasionally narrating the proceedings. He's no robot from Earth Defense!, which was Zen's last downloadable table. But then again, what is?
In the middle of it all sits a big fat eponymous sword which has a tendency to shunt the ball right between your flippers if you're not careful. Double-edged sword, that.
As much as I love the classic tables in the Gottlieb and Williams collections for their nostalgia value and super serious physics, you really can't beat Zen Studios when it comes to designing exciting new tables. Videogame pinball aficionados without PS3's are missing out.
