USA is number one in videogaming! Take that, world!

According to the 2009 International Survey conducted by Today's Gamers, the percentage of Americans who play videogames is higher than any other nationality. Not only that, but we spend way more time playing videogames than other countries. Of all the respondents to the online survey of dudes over 8-years-old, 87% said they "played computer games*", spending an average of 11.5 hours a week. Second place in terms of population percentage was Britain, where only 74% of dudes said the played computer games. Second place in terms of time spent was France, where the dudes who said they played computer games spent an average of 7.1 hours a week.

Ha, not even close. USA! USA! USA!

There are more charts from the survey here.

* Note this terminology flings the door wide-open for people who play Minesweeper, Wii Fit, and that farming thing on Facebook.

This graph doesn't include Korean or China.

The fun you can have with statistics...

Being an online survey, the numbers could also mean, that in america there are fewer non-gamers who use the internet. With the non-online population not included at all, it doesn't say anything about the entire populations.

And there was I thinking that the USA only had the most obese children. Well that's me told then. Bravo.

The percentage that isn't covered probably were playing too much to notice the survey anyways.
Would be intrigued to learn how much our cousins from the East are playing though. I suspect that while they have some extremes, by percentage they don't come close.

I went looking at their site, but I didn't have any luck finding much information about their study methodology. Any idea where that information is, or alternatively, any other studies that are more up front with their methods. These numbers would be really useful--if only I actually trusted any of them.

Hoi Gilbert, if you go to www.todaysgamers.com and follow the country links and then have a look at all the links on those country pages you will find info on how we set it up together with TNS. Here is a general parapgrah:
The 2009 Today’s Gamers International Survey (www.todaysgamers.com) is the latest in a series of identical, nation-wide surveys conducted by TNS and Gamesindustry.com in the Netherlands, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and the United States. Data for the 2009 edition was collected from a total of 13,000 respondents, selected to represent the nations demographic profile. The interviews were conducted online, therefore the results represent the population with internet access. Other topics in the survey include full breakdowns by demographic, general interest, buying intent, media consumption, local media channel preferences, motivation to play, payment methods, digital distribution, number of games played, game platform selection, most appreciated features, and betting/gambling participation. Five firms were partners in the survey's development: RealGames (Zylom), Keesing Games, RTL Group, GamePoint, and SPIL GAMES. Both the national and international comparative reports are currently available, as well as raw data for custom queries.
Let me know if you have any questions, Peter Warman, MD Gamesindustry.com

YA!! We are fat, lazy and social Awkward!!! Go USA!! Maybe one day we can add fast food delivery so people never leave the house!!

Are we seriously boasting about this? This is pathetic. Not surprising, but pathetic nonetheless. I'm actually ashamed to live here now. It's good to know that most of us have nothing better to do with our time. Or, more likely, that we choose to waste our time over spending it doing something more worthwhile.

By Fuzzy Green at 6:25 AM ON 11/07/09

Oh JJD, Tom steeped the item in sarcasm, don't be precious. You're right to feel torn but then that's the price of progress. In the mean time, keep wearing that Canadian flag if you step outside the borders.
