New York Daily News announces the fall of the Nintendo Wii

The New York Daily News infers from Nintendo's declining profits that the Wii has "lost its cool factor" and gamers are "no longer hot for [it]". I'm sure there are champagne corks a-popping in the corporate offices of Sony and Microsoft. Hardcore gamers' long national nightmare is finally over.

Read the obituary here.

I could be wrong, but my personal observation working at a major retailer is that the price drops haven't really energized Wii sales to the degree many assumed it would. They're up, but it's not like there are shortages for them. It makes me wonder if the system has already reached a saturation point.

I'm sure it will still be the top selling console of the holiday season, I just don't think the numbers will be anywhere near what they've been the last two years.

Their 2 primary target audiences either hit peuberty or got sent to a 'home'. It happens....

Ironically, I think my wife, who won't come anywhere near my games, is starting to considering getting a Wii for the family as another piece of exercise equipment.

hey joe, maybe its a wife thing, I am getting one for the family for Christmas too, but in this economy I am no longer doing my holiday shopping early
THAT is what they are picking up in sales figures, the shoppers of the household are holding off on Holiday shopping
it will be BRUTAL for the retailers in this economy, it is ot IMO a Wii specific event

I'd say it was just because almost everyone who wanted one has now got one. So get some more cool games for it nintendo!

By budgethero at 12:35 PM ON 11/03/09

really, how long did they expect it to go before the law of averages makes it so that everyone who wants a wii, and can buy one, has one. boo hoo, so sad, it had a *great* run. now lets get on with our lives.

Interesting!

Well if the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS says it's so, it MUST be true! I mean, it's not like there's a new Metroid and two new Super Mario games coming out this Christmas season. Right...Nintendo's gonna be hurting for sales.

And Sarkus, working at a checkout counter at a "major retailer" doesn't make you an expert. Need I point out we're still in a recession, and buying a video game console is the last thing on a LOT of people's minds? Waning Nintendo sales doesn't mean Microsoft or Sony's sales are improving.

Corks popping...ha! You're assuming the corporate offices will fail to see the big picture as stupendously as you have. Let's be realistic; Microsoft and Nintendo aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Sony is closing subdivisions left and right, so their survival is a little more questionable to me at this time. Not that I'm going to stop buying games for my PS3. I love that thing.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go play some Metroid Prime Trilogy on my Wii.

Saying the Wii is out is nuts. Based on everything I've read the next gen consoles are not just around the corner. I will forego analysis on that and say that the current consoles are it for the foreseeable future so I think that losing its cool is not an issue that's what we're stuck with.

Whoever wrote that article is obviously a 'hardcore' and it is his 'wish' that the Wii will fall so that 3rd parties will concentrate on them. Got news for you pal: There aren't enough 'hardcore' gamers out there to make the millions these guys want. So grin and bear it. There are always going to be a certain cabal of elitists who think the whole world should take a loss for their personal entertainment but it's not going to happen.

On the other hand, I know some senior citizens who are buying Wiis so their grand kids can play them when they come over and one in particular who bought the Fit so she could do the yoga thing. Can the other two say that? Granny bought an X-box to play HALO! I'm sure there may be some out there and I'd love to see that in a MS ad. ;^) Oh and in case you think I'm a Nintendo fanboy full disclosure: I do have a Wii that I bought to play Zelda and Metroid, but I prefer PC gaming, the only console you can upgrade yourself.
