October 26, 2009: wallet threat level red!

October 26, 2009: wallet threat level red!

This week's wallet threat level deserves an exclamation point for two games that put about eighty of your dollars in dire peril. The first is Ratchet & Clank: Crack in Time for the Playstation 3 and the second is Torchlight for the PC. Based on my first few hours with Crack in Time, it may very well be the finest Ratchet & Clank yet. But even if it isn't, it's perhaps the best looking game I've ever seen on the Playstation 3. Yeah, you read that right. And, no, it's not just hyperbole. And Torchlight is the closest you can get to a new Diablo without it actually being called Diablo. Both of these wonderful games are severe wallet threats. You have been warned.

Then there's Forza 3, the utterly whelming third entry in Microsoft's racing game series that I would have enjoyed a lot more if I'd never played Need for Speed: Shift. But if you're a racing game completionist, you won't want to miss this one. One that you probably will want to miss is Fairytale Fights, a gory tongue-in-cheek hatchet-in-hand decapitated-head-on-the-floor "what-were-they-thinking?" take on fairy tales in the form of an awkward combat platformer that happens to come out the same week as Ratchet & Clank: Crack in Time. What were they thinking indeed?

And that's the extent of my first-hand knowledge of this week's potential wallet threats. I'm afraid I have no intel yet about Tekken 6, DJ Hero, and the "Ballad of Gay Tony" add-on for Grand Theft Auto IV.

Interesting. I'm a huge fan of Diablo-esqe games, but I haven't heard of Torchlight. The biggest threat to my wallet is Borderlands for the PC, the "Diablo with guns" game.

By Ginger Yellow at 12:26 PM ON 10/26/09

Rock, Paper, Shotgun has had quite a lot of Torchlight coverage recently, so you might want to search through the archives there. It does look very interesting indeed.

How about Painkiller Resurrection?

By rrmorton at 4:48 PM ON 10/26/09

I don't understand why you're raving about Ratchet & Clank: Crack in Time. Isn't that for the PS3? I thought Tom Chick hated the PS3 and every game on that system. That's what everyone on the internet says so it must be true, right? I'm so confused.

I just ordered Torchlight from Steam. All I needed was a little nudge; it's not too hard to convince me to try a new Diablo clone, especially when it costs less than $20. Thanks for the tip!

Don't forget that Borderland for the PC comes out this week and just unlocked on Steam like 2 hours ago.

By Ridiculous! at 4:55 PM ON 10/26/09

When you are the only video game site that has yet to review Uncharted 2 you don't get to make ridiculous statements such as R&C:CiT is the best looking game on the PS3. For those of us adults out there, cartoonish characters don't compare to the near photo-realism that Uncharted 2 delivers. If you ever want this site to become a credible video game site, start doing your research and stop making outlandish claims that no sane person would agree with!

By Sup3rT3d at 5:45 PM ON 10/26/09

Yeah Tom, why haven't you reviewed Uncharted 2 yet?

Oh, wait.

Still, you better start doing your research (looking at other people's review scores so you can copy them) and stop making outlandish claims (agree with eveyone else rather than have your own opinion) if you want to become a credible video game site (churn out the same unreadable nonsesnse as everyone else)!

By Andy Bates at 7:28 PM ON 10/26/09

I agree with Sup3rT3d. Also, Tom, stop making clearly unsupported statements like “Crack in Time is the best-looking game on the PS3,” when we all know that beauty and graphics are completely objective and can be measured with a properly calibrated Attractorometer. Just make sure that you use the “Adults” setting, not the “Kiddie Cartoonish Characters” setting. We adults all prefer things that look exactly like the real world, not fantastical sci-fi whiz-bang settings!

By LeonKaiser at 10:16 PM ON 10/26/09

Well honestly I hate to side with Tom due to his...less then accurate game reviews at times but he has done a Semi Review already which is here http://www.crispygamer.com/gamereviews/2009-10-13/uncharted-2-among-thieves-ps3-2.aspx

As well as alittle ways down the page on the main Fidgit page labled "Uncharted 2 is not the game it could have been." I have yet to play the game personally but I don't bother using reviews from other people to choose my games I wish to play. I look at video's from the games in HQ on youtube after they are out, see any loading or framerate problems and judge if I will buy the game off of that.

That's not to say that I do not take into consideration the opinions of the reviewers, since they are gamers in their own right and have a good handle on how a game "Should" be in their opinion. (Their opinions being based off of all other games they have played since when you play one shooter your mind instantly begins to compare it to all the other shooters you have played before, or even heard of.)

By Felipe 058 at 10:37 PM ON 10/26/09

Dammit, I love the Ratchet and Clank series, and I've been with them since the very beginning! But my lack of a PS3 has disallowed me from playing the PS3 ones :'(

And Andy, wasn't there an Attractorometer in Up Your Arsenal? :P

This site's (blog?) a joke. There's no, actual, credible news. Although I agree with Tom sometimes, the majority of the time I don't. He only provides relavent news (or stroking) for games he cares about; which generally suck. He then beats the point in to the ground by posting 40 stories about his travels in sci-fi mediocrity like Section 8. It's ashame Syfy attaches itself to this; being that it's the only reason I come here. The day Tom said that the Mass Effect universe was generic sci-fi, I knew I couldn't take his opinion seriously. It continues to this day. Keep it up!

Mr McGee, the things you dislike about the site are for me the most attractive bits - the diaries, the reporting on games that haven't been slavered over by the game press, the entertaining writing. I also think you're motive for coming here is totally weird, you make it sound like it's something forced on you, when really choosing to read something based purely on its branding is a bit odd.

Also, Mass Effect IS a generic sci-fi universe. Doesn't mean it's not a great game, and a great universe, but point to one thing that hasn't been done before over and over again. Lrn2Science Fiction

superted, andy and qalu, word.

Seems like a lot of people are butthurt about their opinions not being the ones posted.

See Tom, you have to remember to read the "INTERNET PRIMER ON WHAT YOU SHOULD LIKE", and then this job will be much easier.

I mean having your own opinion and criticism? Even when it doesn't match many other mainstream criticisms? That is bullocks and just not acceptable.

For shame on you for... for... doing your job.

By WetbiscuitMcGee at 10:30 PM ON 10/27/09

I can appreciate what you're saying. Let me first say that I appreciate what Tom does. Anyone who positively promotes gaming, in my book, is a good dude. It's nothing personal against him, I just tend to disagree with him on a very regular basis. I've seen Tom bash and blow over some really good games; and not games that fall in to the "mainstream." I guess what I was trying to do, a little more abrasively than it should have come off, was that there are a lot of games that come out that are quite good and I feel it's a shame for them to pushed aside so easily. I understand Tom's one guy and can't play everything. I enjoy many of his headlines and the commentary of some games, but it often comes of as smug and it'd be nice to hear from other people when it comes to the site. I check Wire for news, Dvice for tech, and all I'm saying is I'd like to see some more variety in Fidgit.

As for Mass Effect, essentially everything falls under the umbrella of generic. In one way or another, almost every story has been done in some way. It takes place with humans meeting aliens in outer space. Done a million times. Sure, that's true of many stories. There was space sci-fi before Star Wars... I mean, look at what Tolken did for fantasy. But, in terms of Mass Effect, there was so much care and attention put into the different worlds, races, main story, and back story, that to lump it in with truly 'generic' games such as Two Worlds is an insult to what was done.

"I understand Tom's one guy and can't play everything. I enjoy many of his headlines and the commentary of some games, but it often comes of as smug and it'd be nice to hear from other people when it comes to the site. "

Um, you do realise there are other gaming sites and blogs, don't you?

By WetbiscuitMcGee at 5:20 PM ON 10/28/09

Of course I get that, but Wire and Dvice both have multiple contributors. Seeing as Fidgit is also connected to Syfy, I don't see why that doesn't apply here.

By Tom Chick at 5:38 PM ON 10/28/09

McGee, it's strictly an issue of resources. I realize this place would benefit from multiple perspectives and additional contributors. But for now, Fidgit is a one-man operation. I would love nothing more than to be able to build Fidgit into a site that can be competitive with places like Joystiq, Kotaku, Shacknews, and so forth. That is part of Syfy's long-term goal, but I don't have any info about when it might happen. Until then, I'm all you get. :)

By WetbiscuitMcGee at 7:11 PM ON 10/28/09

Thanks for your reply, Tom. Like I said, I admire you for getting this project off the ground. Your attachment to Syfy is a great way to have your voice heard, that otherwise might be muffled in the endless stream of useless internet sludge. I apologize for being so negative in my earlier posts, but I'm as passionate about games as you are. For example, it seems your neck deep in Dragon Age, and your most recent post has piqued my interest even more. On the other hand, I'm rockin' out Borderlands, deep in the heart of Pandora; a game you glanced over. No harm done. Like I said earlier, you can't play it all. That's what gaming's all about. Shit, I just turned 25 last week and will never 'outrgrow' it. There is no such thing anymore. We've come out of the woodworks and proclaimed to the masses, "I am gamer, here me roar! Follow me to the promised land of awesomeness... a place where it's ok to search toilets for treasures and 8 year olds can tell you how much you suck from half a world away." And come they have. Oh yes, they have come. We stand tall with the likes of movies, TV, and music. This is America baby. A place of baseball, apple pie, and free speech. Oh well, two outta three ain't bad.

By Tom Chick at 7:54 PM ON 10/28/09

I actually quite like Borderlands, as you'll see if you visit Fidgit tomorrow. You're right that one guy can't play all games, but he's going to try. :)

And thanks for the apology, Mr. McGee. I really don't mind negative comments, as folks a lot of time just want to blow off steam. I hope you'll keep adding your two cents when you feel passionate.

By joesocwork at 10:13 PM ON 10/28/09

Joystiq, Kotaku, Shacknews? And all this time I thought it GameSpot, IGN, and GamesRadar that reviewers aspired to! :P

By Anonymous at 2:00 PM ON 10/30/09

Actually Tom, I'd be a wee bit worried if Fidgit got additional reviewers had more reviewers than just you... I do hope that your eventual co-reviewers have just as much insight, quirkiness and chutzpah as your readers have come to expect.
