Netflix gives PS3 owners the best news this side of a price cut

Great news today for those of you with a Playstation 3. You're getting Netflix*!

This will mean Microsoft no longer has an exclusive relationship with Netflix, which has been available for a year for Xbox Live gold accounts. It's worth noting that whereas you need a $50/year paid account on the Xbox 360 to take advantage of Netflix (pictured), now it will be a part of Sony's free online service. However, Netflix won't be built into Sony's media crossbar interface. Instead, you have to put a disk into your PS3 whenever you want to watch an Instant View movie.

The service will roll out later this year. Sign up here to receive one of the disks as soon as they're available.

* Assuming you already have a paid Netflix account, natch.

Xbox Live gold is $50, not $60. It's also widely discounted; for example, Amazon has it for $40. The PS3 version also requires you to get off the couch and put a special Netflix disc in the drive.

Thanks for the price correction Cyrano. I did mention the disk, so thanks for getting my back on that one.

I'm curious as to what the quality will be like on PS3. My Xbox Netflix seems to vary from being great to barely working. I don't think it's my connection speeds given that I never really have issues with other things.

I can't believe I just realized that Netflix comes with an XBL Gold! How did I miss that?

By Thresher_V at 4:48 PM ON 10/26/09

That would be a crime...actually having to get up to put in a disk.....and all the strides we gamers make to fight the lazy stereotype.

By Mihos at 6:54 PM ON 10/26/09

Next rom update will get rid of the disk I bet.

By Lifeman25 at 7:14 PM ON 10/26/09

The disk that you have to put in increases the quality of the dvds and allows Blue ray movies to also be downloaded and played

By Jake203 at 8:23 PM ON 10/26/09

Oh no! You have to get up and put a disc in for something thats FREE. Lazy bastards, I hope the xtra $50 is worth it to X Boxers

By LeonKaiser at 10:03 PM ON 10/26/09

I have to agree with Lifeman25, I believe having a hard disk to access the Netflix will be far better then software if only because the quality is solid on a disk (most of the time if it's not flawed and such) which I believe will mean far better quality over all.

As for getting up off the couch to put a disc in, we already do that to put in our games, what's the big deal?

This is great news. i just recently restarted my netflix account. Ive been unable to buy as many movies as Id like so since im limited I rent them. With this addition I can now let my kids sit still on the couch and watch movies on that instead of hearing them fight over who sits in what chair to watch on the PC.

This is great news for PS3ers. I know my buddies have been envious of my netflix on X-box for a year now.

The whole putting a disk in thing just seems stupid. Wonder whats going on with Sony and Netflix that they can't just make it a downloadable app.
