More details revealed about World of Warcraft movie

IMDB shows a new subtitle for the World of Warcraft movie: "The Rise of the Lich King". Worldofwarcraft.net parses the significance of the new subtitle, suggesting it has something to do with a World of Warcraft novel that includes dialogue like the following:

Now, I call out to the spirits of this place. Whatever you be, good or ill or neither or both. I can feel you here. I know you are listening. I'm ready. I understand. And I tell you now--I will give anything, or pay any price, if only you will help me save my people.
That's from a New York Times bestseller, by the way.

The subtitle definitely implies the story will follow Arthas, a fallen human hero whose story goes way back to the days when Warcraft was a real time strategy game.

wtf is a lich king?

By union at 1:08 PM ON 10/05/09

Google it. you might learn something new. Its rather sad how few actually know there was a RTS before the MMO.

This is false. I had seen this already reported at a wow-related site. IT is incredably easy to get stuff added or changed on imdb, besides, Blizzard has said the movie with not be about Arthas.

"back to the days when Warcraft was a real time strategy game"? I've only played Warcraft 3. I haven't played World of Warcraft at all. It doesn't seem like that long ago that Warcraft 3 was new.

@G

Warcraft3 was released 2002, My daughter is 1 year older... Now she approaches 9 years old... it was a fair amount ago.

By marcusbrody at 4:10 PM ON 10/05/09

Yeah. Just Seems like yesterday the Warcraft 3 came out. LOL. I can't believe how long its been since TBC!!! WOTLK just came out and now we're going to Cataclysm??? We're getting old. A movie based on Arthas would be really wicked. Just Imagine that crap!

By WildGunsTomcat at 6:17 PM ON 10/05/09

LOL My God people. I used to play the ORIGINAL World of Warcraft. You people are children.

And this movie is a STUPID idea.

By Guido at 6:42 PM ON 10/05/09

So they would use the name of one of the WoW Expansions for the subtitle of the movie? Me thinks someone on IMDB is yankin your chain SciFi (I refuse to use SyFy...just sayin).

It's unfortunate that so many people don't remember the Warcraft RTS games. They were alot of fun. Been playing those since the first one, 15 years now.

Arthas was not the original Lich King:

I think a Warcraft movie is an excellent idea. I played WoW faithfully for 3 years before I stopped playing because of a hacked account and security risks on my computer. Not that Blizzard needs my 2 cents but I feel the best storyline that would satisfy warcraft enthusiasts and the vast movie going public would be the "Song of Aegwynn". If you want to know the story, look it up.

By mcgizzle313 at 12:39 AM ON 10/06/09

THE RTS WAS THE BOM TRUE IT WAS SHITTY GAME PLAY BUT LOOK WUT IT SPAWNED IN ITS AFTERMATH!!!

By josh m at 2:55 AM ON 10/06/09

@ Union:
Sarcasm, it's a wonderful thing. I played the original Warcraft RTS when it came out.

Anyway, I'm sure it will succeed in the same sense that most other movies from video games do.

By Yora at 6:43 AM ON 10/06/09

Reportedly Chris Metzen will do the script. That would be someone who was actually involved in the creation of Warcraft. I don't think this has ever happened with a game franchise movie before. ^^

By Joshua at 9:19 AM ON 10/06/09

Wasn't Metzen the one that completely FUBAR'd the story for the first WoW expansion?

By Random Hero at 7:47 AM ON 10/22/09

But won't the pasty sun fearing WoW players actually have to leave the basement in order to see this movie in the theater. At the very least they'll have to stop playing long enough to download a cam, R5 or DVDrip and that will tear them away from there alternative reality. This movie already has FAIL written all over it.
