You've already created your character, but you won't be able to play Dragon Age proper for another week. However, you can play Dragon Age Journeys, a browser-based Flash tie-in built to promote the full game.
Wait, don't go. I know what you're thinking. This isn't that. This isn't something where you hit monkeys with a hammer to try to win a free Playstation 3. I promise. This is a full-blown RPG with tactical combat, inventories, and character advancement, created by a group of guys who've done this sort of thing before (check out Monster's Den here). And what's more, Dragon Age Journeys will even unlock treasure in Dragon Age -- the 3D version -- if you play enough.
One of the quests gives you a doo-dad called Embri's Many Pockets that improves your resistance to various attacks. Filling out the three marketing surveys you'll find throughout the game gives you another doo-dad called the Amulet of the War Mage that also improves your resistance to various attacks. And you win the Helm of the Deep if you go whole-hog and earn all five of the game's achievements. These achievements include finishing the game, but along the way killing an ogre without losing any health and killing two monsters with one attack. I'm not sure how bad-ass the Helm of the Deep is because I haven't played Dragon Age yet (Is +2 Constitution good?), but it's got better numbers than Embri's Many Pockets or the Amulet of the War Mage.
According to this interview, you can get all the way through Dragon Age Journeys in two and a half hours. And this is just the beginning. There will be additional chapters, and the M-word* was mentioned. But at that point, you'll probably be busy trotting around the 3D world of Dragon Age wearing your Helm of the Deep, spending your real world lucre on downloadable content and horse armor and whatnot.
* Microtransactions.

I'm assuming that those of us who are getting DA:O for 360 or PS3 won't be able to transfer these items (obviously) or get them by any other means?

According to the site, the unlockable items work on console versions -- they're linked to an EA account you can access platform-independently.
