10 things you totally have to do in Brutal Legend

10 things you totally have to do in Brutal Legend

There's a lot to do in Brutal Legend. You've got a whole new world to explore, fancy upgrades to buy, a car to pimp out, dragons to liberate, sights to see, and stage battles to fight. But as you're doing all these things, I have a few tips for things you won't want to miss. Don't worry, they're spoiler-free!

After the jump are 10 things you totally have to do in Brutal Legend.

10) Don't start the game
Once Jack Black puts the album on the counter, don't press start yet. Just watch for a bit.

9) Find the solo where the highway ends at the Sea of Black Tears
Seriously, you have to get this one as soon as you can. It's not to be missed. Take the raised highway south where it crumbles into the Sea of Black Tears. Then look to your right for a solo stone. I don't want to spoil anything, but I'll leave you with this as a teaser:

8) Lend a hand
As you drive around, you'll notice small battles just happening, usually between demons and your compatriots from Ironheade. You should jump in when you see these battles, because you'll earn extra fire tribute for killing enemies. And you'll need this extra fire tribute if you want the Loyal Customer achievement for buying everything from the forge. What you earn from doing missions isn't going to be enough.

7) Visit old friends
After you've finished the single player game, there are final moments to enjoy with the main characters. Be sure to find them.

6) Read your tour book
When you fight against Lionwhyte, the Drowned, and the Tainted Coil during stage battles, you're not going to have any idea what the enemy units are doing. Unless you read their entries in the Tour Book. The battles will be a lot easier once you understand why certain things are happening.

5) Carry your rally flag
In stage battles, you can plant a rally flag. All newly trained units will emerge from your stage and move to the rally flag. But did you know you can pick up the flag up and carry it around? This means all new units will find their way to you as soon as you build them.

4) Man your stage lights
You probably know you can use the speakers and fog machine to defend your stage. But did you know you can fly up to the lights and use them as guns? They're perfect for taking out big slow siege vehicles.

3) Drive the Screamer while playing a stage battle as Tainted Coil
If you're a fan of Arrested Development or Mr. Show, you'll hear a familiar voice if you take control of this torturous vehicle.

2) Refuse every mission
Just to hear the dialogue for turning down a mission. There's some funny stuff in there. You can, of course, immediately accept the mission after you've heard it.

1) Use the earthshaker
Stuck? Not sure what to do with those chained totems? Overrun by spiders or rats? Don't overlook the earthshaker, which you do by pressing the A+X button on the 360 controller.

" Drive the Screamer while playing a stage battle as Tainted Coil"

Okay, now you're just making stuff up.

By ChrisSal at 4:04 PM ON 10/16/09

I think he was referring to the Screamwagon.

Any hints on where to find your old friends after you win the game? Glad to here there is a little more to the ending after the credits.

Thanks for the list once I get my hands on this game I'll have to check these out.

Thanks for the tip on not starting the game. Waiting patiently went against everything I was taught, but it paid off.

" Find the solo where the highway ends at the Sea of Black Tears"

OK, I'm being stupid. Where exactly is this solo stone? When I take the highway to the end, all I find is a chained dragon.

By Horrible Oscar at 5:06 PM ON 10/18/09

Yeah, I got a little confused by those directions as well. Some directions as spoiler free as I can make them: You're probably on the highway that runs east to west, on the first island on the map. Once you access the other island later in the main game, you'll eventually find another highway that runs north to south on it: The solo itself is waaaay down at the south. It's pretty easy to miss if you just follow the story.

YALL'S need to gets jobs.

It was indeed my stupidity - I was on the first island. I took "as soon as you can" to mean straight away, rather than "as soon as it's physically possible".

Incidentally, while I'm being stupid, is it just me or is the whole "black tears" thing just thrown at you without any prior exposition. When, um, that thing happened after I beat Lionwhyte, I got the feeling that I'd missed a cut scene. Is that part of the backstory explained in one of the lore relics? I've pieced it together by now, but it seemed jarring given the quality of the rest of the writing.

I thought it cropped up a few times beforehand in the story, although it wasn't completely explained you got enough to get the gist of it, and then it's explained a bit more later.

I loved the almost Flash Gordon (the movie) Queen inspired rock opera in the more dramatic scenes. Epic yet can be taken with a pinch of salt. I look forward to Brutal Legend 2!

I have had a lot of fun just driving around looking for stuff in the first couple hours. I found a couple tab slabs I'm not sure if you would normally encounter until further in the game which is a nice bonus for the adventurers.

Something I'm having trouble with though, I can't free the dragons that are bound with S&M gear. Earthshaker doesn't do it and I think I'm missing something simple.

By Chijts at 11:03 AM ON 10/19/09

Think Pyro - hold down the guitar button.

By CitizenChip at 11:04 AM ON 10/19/09

Q -

All you need to do is hold down the X button (assuming you are playing on the 360) to use the flame attack with your guitar. That will free the dragons.
