From the announcement that the sequel to the Playstation 3 tactical RPG Valkyria Chronicles will be on the PSP:Valkyria Chronicles is a genuine hidden gem on PS3™. It was one of the PS3's most highly rated tactical RPG games so we're delighted to offer PSP system owners to play Valkyria Chronicles 2. It's one of our most cherished franchises so we hope the fans will welcome this exclusive sequel.
I speak PR. "Geniune hidden gem" means that it got good reviews but too few of you people actually bought it. I'm not sure what Sega expected by only making it available on the PS3, but there it is. Furthermore, the press release calls Valkyria Chronicles "one of the most highly reviewed tactical RPGs ever to appear on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system", which is as true as it is meaningless, since tactical RPGs are almost entirely the domain of the Playstation 2.
The PSP sequel will be out next summer. It takes place in a civil war twenty years after the original storyline. As the epic drama unfolds in the game, players will experience stories of friendship, love and growing pains during a time of war and revolution.
Growing pains? Look, Sega, I have a hard enough time convincing people this is a serious tactical RPG with a really cool phased-turn battle system. You're not helping me when you make it sound like Judy Blume wrote the storyline.

And if you're having enough trouble convincing people about this, I can't imagine how NIS-America will manage to boost sales for its ancestor, Sakura Wars, in November.

...someone wanna port the original to 360?
Please?

I like my PSP, and will most likely get this... but I really don't like when sequels come out on system the original wasn't on in the same generation. I can see why fans might be a little put off. Phantasy Star Portable was kind of the same way.

Being a PC guy, I don't get what tactical RPG means anyway. Does it mean party play like The Last Remnant? Is it a quasi-FPS like Oblivion or Fallout3? Is it turn-based or real-time? It's definitely not D&D fantasy looking. The picture resembles an anime Mad Max.

Well, VC is unlike pretty much any other tactical RPG, although it shares a lot of the same qualities.
Generally, tactical RPGs are games in which you build up a party of characters over time, with improving stats and equipment, while engaging in (turn based) set piece battles. Think X-Com, basically, but with a more linear story.
Valkyria Chronicles does this, but adds the novel element that the battles combine turn based gameplay with real time, third person movement. It's very, very good.

@joesocwork, for a PC example of a tactical RPG see Fallout: Tactics. Certainly not the best example of its type (Final Fantasy Tactics typically takes the crown there) but it's one of the few to ever be made for PC.

GY: That kind of sounds like The Last Remnant, a linear story where teams can specialize and level up. I've always enjoyed true "high-fantasy" RPG's such as Baldur's Gate where the protagonist can add members to the party then each can level up individually. It was fun making decision about who to add for either strategy or to witness their interactions.
Peter: Ah! I saw a Fallout pack come out on Steam from Interplay. I think Bethesda might be feuding with them about the current use of the name.

I haven't played The Last Remnant, but VC is much less of an RPG than Baldur's Gate. Like I say, it's basically a series of set piece battles, with fixed objectives and enemies (although there is an element of randomness in many of the missions). Also, there's much less character customisation than in most Western RPGs and even most conventional J-RPGs. You do get to choose from a very wide range of characters for your party, however, and they all have various traits, likes and dislikes.

Speaking of classic RPG's, I'm really getting excited about Dragon Age: Origins. I hope Tom does a review on it.

All I can say is... no big deal. Played VC as a Demo, and deleted it soon after. The game is fine if you are a 10 year old, and maybe love anime, but for me the game was not good at all. Not on the PS3... good. I'll take COD MW2, MAG, U2, Marvel Alliance 2, DA Origins, and even Dantes Inferno over that stuff.

I loved VC and I'm glad we're getting a sequel. I admit, though, I was hoping to see them go further with those gorgeous, painted graphics.

This is old news, isn't it?
I was really disappointed when I first heard the news (as VC was the game that convinced me to buy a PS3 and I have no regrets on that score). Let's hope it returns to its roots one day.

I own and really like the first game, for them to release it on a weaker system must shown that it did not do well in sales for them to release on PS3.
The only reason why I bought a ps3 was for the roleplaying games...and sadly how sony shown me that they can screw their loyal fans when we aren't looking.
It seemed PS3 games are more genres of the old xbox and the 360 is more like the ps2 in terms of PS3 screwed the roleplaying and tactical gamers of the old ps2's and 360 to have mostly sports and first person shooter games while 360 got more diverst in role playing, tactical and over all choices to play.
If i knew sony was gonna screw me like htis now, i would have bought a 360 for the games i rather play.
