Strange Adventures in Infinite Space no longer for sale

You might have missed Strange Adventures in Infinite Space, which came out four years ago. It was a cross between a casual game and an epic space strategy game. You piloted a ship around a randomly generated universe, explored worlds, contacted aliens, mixed it up with lasers and plasma torpedoes and whatnot, and then came home to see how many points you'd scored. And the idea was that you could do it all in fifteen minutes. Leave the sixty-hour galactic epics to the other games.

Well, if you missed Strange Adventures, I have some bad news and some good news. The bad news is that you can no longer buy it. The good news is that it's now free. Get it here from publisher Shrapnel Games or here from developer Digital Eel. Of course, these guys have an ulterior motive for giving you this game for free. They're hoping you'll be interested in the sequel, Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space.

Holy Haley's Comet, Batman!

I swear to you, I came > < this close only a few short days ago from buying SAIS. This indie game has long been on my radar but I could never bring myself to buying it...heh, shame on me I guess.

Still, I am grateful to the developers for releasing this game. I will give much consideration to buying their followup in the near future.

Thanks Tom!

Not sure how I missed this the first time around, but that kind of duration for that kind of gameplay sounds really cool. Thanks for the tip.

I enjoyed the demo a lot, but found the time limit really frustrating, so I never bought. Thanks for the tip.

It's amusing for a pass or two, but there's no depth there. Your "adventures" consist of random events that mostly give you random alien objects whose properties are largely opaque. Occasionally you get to shoot something, but because you have no idea what any of the weapons do or how they stack up power-wise, (same for defenses), it's not much fun. And there aren't many real decisions to be made because you have no basis for making them.

The effects of the weapons are consistent from game to game (unlike randomly generated weapons in Roguelikes), so it only takes a few playthroughs before you remember that a Micrometeorite Cannon > Chaingun, etc.

It's trial and error. Most of the time you're dealing with alien technology, so it kind of makes sense in a weird way. It didn't take me long to decide what made an effective ship build.
