The above trailer debuted at the Tokyo Game Show to coincide with the announcement that Popcap and Square/Enix have decided it's time that someone with real commercial muscle makes the next installment of the Puzzle Quest series. They didn't exactly put it that way, but that's clearly what they're thinking. Puzzle Quest is a combination of Bejeweled with an RPG, created by indie developer Infinite Interactive and released in a few iterations for nearly every imaginable platform. And since Popcap created Bejeweled, it's a pretty karmic neutral thing for them to make their own Puzzle Quest. Hence, Gyromancer.
The twist in Gyromancer is that you're not just playing Bejeweled when you go into a battle. You're playing Bejeweled Twist! So when you think about it, that's a pretty apt title. Much better than, say, Twist Magician, or Turn Wizard, or Rotate Prestidigitator. You're mancing the gyro. Also, it seems to have none of Popcap's whimsical touch or Puzzle Quest's bright atmosphere. Gyromancer is all harsh and metallic and grim and loudly clanking and full of earnest detailed Japanese artwork of dragons and warriors. Serious game is serious!
No word on a release date, but it'll be available for the Xbox 360 and PC.
