And while we're on the topic of free stuff, how about some new maps for Killing Floor, the co-op zombie killing game that isn't Left 4 Dead? How about fifty new maps? And how about getting them for free? And how about a personal assurance from Tripwire Interactive, the developers of Killing Floor, that several of them aren't terrible?
Tripwire Interactive announced the winners in their Grindhouse Custom Map Making Contest. Waterworks, Filth's Cross and Corner Market took first, second, and third place respectively, with Waterworks creator Damien Laurent getting a $5000 prize. Tripwire also listed the next six runner ups, which essentially gives their stamp of approval to nine player-made maps you can download and play, free of charge. Get them all here.
One of the cool things about these maps is evident in their titles. The naming conventions is such that each map is preceded by a "KF-", for Killing Floor. But if you scan the titles of the maps, almost all of them are followed by a "v2", "v3", or even "v5" for their version number. These aren't just maps cobbled together and slapped online. They've been tested, fixed, and upgraded.
By the way, this was just the first round. The second round of the contest with all new maps is already underway with an October 2nd deadline for submissions. Expect plenty more maps in time for Halloween.
