Calculating your contribution to Blizzard's coffers

Calculating your contribution to Blizzard\'s coffers

If you're into MMOs, I don't recommend typing /played into the chat window. And if your really into MMOs, I doubly don't recommend it. The only worse thing you could do is calculate exactly how much money you've spent.

Which is what Jeff Hollis at Inc Gamers has done.

Recently, I got to thinking about how much money my family has spent on WoW. The truth is, I don't know the answer, even as I type this. Interestingly, that question led to another similar question, simply because I've spent money on a whole bunch of other Blizzard products. I tried to do a quick little mental calculation, but things quickly got out of hand. The moment I began to do the mental mathematics, I realized that the amounts involved far exceeded anything I'd expected.
After detailing the various expenditures and doing some math, Mr. Hollis comes to the sum of $4,374.08. However, about half of this was the cost of maintaining an account for his wife and flying her to a Blizzard event in Seoul. So the takeaway lesson from this cautionary tale is that the best way to save money is not to marry someone who's into MMOs. In real life, of course. You can feel free to marry such a person in the actual MMO.

The way I figure it, it is about $40 per year for software updates, and about $14 per month for play. Taken hourly, it's one of the most cost-efficient entertainment options I have. Or does that just mean that we play too much?

WoW severely reduced the amount of money I spend on games. I used to spend about $200 a month on games, but now it is $30 for two WoW accounts with the occasional game purchase (maybe one a quarter?). Rock Band does the same thing with song downloads; it has deeply cut my spending on new games.

My long term (but recently broken) addiction to EQ and EQ2 probably saved me thousands of dollars in what would have been date money alone!

"wtf is wow?"

Best question ever.

$15 X 12 months = $180 a year. You can spend that in a single night taking a date to dinner and dancing.

This has got to be the dumbest post ever.
