The bloody view from inside Killing Floor\'s new foundry

Here at Fidgit, we're big fans of Killing Floor, aka Steam's other co-op zombie killing game. So we were delighted to learn about the new downloadable content. This latest stuff is free, unlike the costumes you can buy for your character (here's a pro tip for the developers: no one wants to pay for a costume in a first-person shooter, because you can't even see it!). The new downloadable content includes a map called "Foundry", an AK-47 that makes the Bullpup almost obsolete, and a katana nearly as cool as the chainsaw.

It also adds soda machines (pictured). Having played lots of Nazi zombie mode from Call of Duty 5, I saved up 3000 of the curly-cue "L" resources. I then tried to put them into the soda machine to "taste the hazzard", which I presume is British for "buy a perk". It didn't work. That particular machine might have been out of order.

But the other stuff I tried did work. In fact, it was pretty awesome.

Here's the entrance to Foundry.

Note the Bioshock-esque statue and "science & steel" motto under the decidedly clunky name of the company. "Horzine"? For, uh "horizontal line"? "Horizon" misspelled? A fanzine for whores? It sounds more like a kind of eyedrops than the name of a steel foundry. But enough nitpicking. Let's have a look inside.

Now we're talking! The main room in Foundry is beautiful. Unfortunately, it's pretty wide open so you're probably not going to want to fight zombies in here. But since Killing Floor has you running all over creation to resupply between rounds, you'll be through here often enough. Also, those walkways overlooking the main room are pretty good for stand-offs, with the added benefit that you can pick off zombies crossing the main room.

Also, note that I'm toting a nifty new AK-47. This is like a slightly improved Bullpup, and it's going to be more recognizable to shooter fans whose gun fetishes have a more international slant. Now before you think that the Bullpup didn't get any love, note this from the latest changelog:

Adjusted Bullpup's firing sound to have more bass
Now for the main event. As anyone who ever found himself atop the awning over the food court at the Willamette Mall knows, a katana is one of the best ways to dispatch zombies. Here it is in action.

And here it is post-action.

Kudos to the developers at Tripwire Interactive for not only offering great content for Killing Floor, but for offering it free of charge. Very nice work, Tripwire!
