A few game developers have attempted the transition from videogames to filmmaking. For instance, Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts famously failed, and Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner quietly succeeded. But how many filmmakers have made the transition to making videogames? And no fair bringing up Steven Spielberg's name being slapped on Boom Blox.
Stacy Davidson might be the first. He's a guy in Houston who used to work in videogames, but then founded a small production company that makes low budget horror films such as Domain of the Damned. Mr. Davidson's most recent project goes back to his gaming roots. He explains it here.If you enjoyed Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and you are at heart a Star Wars fan, then do I have a treat for you. This game was born out of my frustration that LucasArts seemed to throw everything but the kitchen sink into their adventure game lineup, with the exception of their flagship property: Star Wars. As awesome as Fate of Atlantis was, it always rubbed salt into the wound for me. I felt like, "OK, Indy's awesome... now where's Han?!?"
The game he's talking about is Han Solo Adventures, a retro point-and-click adventure reminiscent of Lucasarts' SCUMM games. The time period is before Star Wars, as Davidson points out it's all pre-Chewbacca. Which also makes me wonder if it's pre-Millennium Falcon. How did Han Solo get around? I can't imagine him in a T-16 or -- shudder! -- a landspeeder.
The site for Han Solo Adventures is here and Mr. Davidson explains that he hasn't contacted Lucasarts, or been contacted by them, but that he plans to proceed as if the game were fan-fiction, offered free of charge.
