Speaking at the Develop Conference, Sony' Peter Edwards revealed that the return rate for PlayStation Home stands somewhere between 25-30 per cent, meaning that over 70 per cent of those who download and try the service do not return for a second time.
I have no idea if Sony is trying to put a positive spin on this ("More than one in four people who try Home become regular users!"). But considering it's free, that sounds like a lot of people aren't the least bit interested. Could it be that Sony's attempt to combine Facebook, avatars, and advertising in a 3D engine isn't a good idea?

Why would you announce something like that?
By MoonDevil at 12:15 PM ON 07/17/09
I have visited the PS3 Home about three times. The first was to check out all the hubub and hype... the other two were to see if anything new or different had occurred since I had not been back in a long while. While the character creation, locations, apartment is pretty cool... it lacks... a lot. Cannot join any 'real' games that I know of with others in the areas (i.e. SOCOM, etc), and everything is a purchase item if you want to get new clothes, apartment items, living spaces, etc. Why would you even want to buy some digital items so your avatar can look good?? I think it was a neat concept to come up with, so you could go into a game zone, get your freak on, smack talk etc... and then play with others on particular PS3 games. But as of now... I think the 1 out of four returning are of the teenage variety. (No offense to teens meant)

I tried it twice. once to see what all the hype was about and again a few months later to see if it got any better.
It's really lame. I think Sony needs to spend more time/energy/money on game devel or something. just seems like a waste of my time.

I am a Home Guide in Playstation Home. Those numbers may be correct but whats not reported is the number of people useing Home right now. PS3 Home has over 7 million inhabitants worldwide (3 million of those being in Europe) Home users have downloaded 6 million virtual items to date. Home has changed so much since open beta. If you have not been on in awhile go in and check out the revamped mall, Buzz space and the new EA sports areas. You may be surprised. Did I mention its free? You can purchase avatar clothing and houses but its not neccesary.
Edward also told Gamasutra that the "average Home session duration is 56 minutes" and that 80 per cent of users were male in the 18-35-years old demographic.

@ Jersquall - Don't tell us, tell Sony. LOL!

I love PS Home. It's a great escape! I love each time I log in it's a different and fun experience.
By HybridLinX at 10:22 PM ON 07/17/09
Home is fundamentally a great concept but was horribly executed, marred by release dates and lack of updates. Also I could never see myself spend $$$ for virtual items, maybe if your number of trophies were translated into currency for home. That would have been great but we all know Sony's out to make a profit.
By ElLmnoh at 2:06 AM ON 07/18/09
How is an mmo without a game included a great concept?
By Chijts at 8:55 AM ON 07/18/09
I also think it's a great concept, if as hybrid said achievements=items, and as a place where you could maybe get to know people a little better before heading into games, like a hub world. I can only speak for myself, but on Xbox Live it's a more ephemeral experience, as it has no hub, you just play a game with a group of random people and either talk to them through the shittiest headset in the world (wihch most sane people don't do due to the wealth of pre-pubescent numbskulls) or PM someone after the game and hope they aren't complete turds.
Sure having a hub is by no means bullet proof, but it's got to be alot better than playing russian roulette with a gamertag that isn't something like "xXDK_dArkSlaYeR452Xx"

It just so happens I logged into Home for the first time in a long time a few nights ago. I was surprised to find myself staying a while. I hit the new "Buzz" area and played some trivia. I won a virtual t-shirt, with the help of my girlfriend who walked by, saw what was going on, and sat down to join in.
I was also surprised to find that playing Infamous apparently unlocked a bunch of clothes so my avatar could be dressed just like Cole.
I'm not saying "OMG, Home is amazing now!" Hardly. But compared to what it used to be, it's a lot better. But it still has a LONG way to go, and honestly Buzz Trivia can't hold a candle to 1 vs 100.
I was, however, encouraged to see some progress. Damning with faint praise, I know.
By SubtlePlantsAreStillObvious at 7:11 PM ON 07/18/09
Home should be aborted. I hope this isn't the future of gaming, clunky 3d interfaces and gimmick motion controls. Console gaming is d0med?

Two questions:
1) How many of those 6 million virtual items were areas "The Mall" or "The Plaza", which you had to download just to leave your apartment?
2) How much of that "56 minute duration" is spent "waiting for crap to load" or "standing in line for something"?
Home is an embarassingly bad application, and anyone complaining about the 3 year olds on Live must prefer having to see people act like idiots to hearing it.
I guess my household helped the Home numbers somewhat, seeing as how both I and my wife checked it out. I only went once, the wife twice but quickly grew bored and annoyed with the constant "u look lik ur av?/ASL?" nonsense.

The main reason I don't bother with HOME anymore is ridiculously annoying jerkoffs that run up and annoy you. As a female, I couldn't take two steps without some fool asking to date me or tell me I'm cute or ugly. The app is already boring then I have to be insulted too? I pass and I won't miss it whenit goes. Free does not always mean good.
By Altitude at 12:17 AM ON 07/21/09
Home is a failed experiment. SONY should let it die already and focus their talents on something else.
By WarshipAngelus at 1:03 AM ON 07/21/09
It's not that people aren't leaving because Home doesn't offer them anything, it's the small things that add up over time.. Like what Keyboard Cat said.
The insulte and ridiculously annoying jerks make Home a less welcome place to vist...
By WarshipAngelus at 1:06 AM ON 07/21/09
I've been on Home for Seven Months now and I'm tired of all the crazy ridiculously stuff that goes on there if it's not one thing it's something else... I have been trying to make friends on Home, but most of the people on Home mostly about 98% of them both Men and Women are annoying jerks and they use Home as their own Personal 3-D Myspace world and most of the Adults that I've meet that are married with children act like ten year old kids and go around making fun of other people on home...
By WarshipAngelus at 1:13 AM ON 07/21/09
I try about three or four times to join a club to meet new people, but most of the people in clubs are worst they don't think for themseveles and they take orders from their club leader...
What's really bad for me atleast is that I want to join a club and meet new people on Home and do some of the glitchs.. But about 99% of the people who do glitchs and are part of clubs happen to be so pick about who they let in their clubs..
By WarshipAngelus at 1:17 AM ON 07/21/09
I've been insulted by many club members from Exodus, Team Omega, LLuminati.. Heck one time when I was in the US bowling alley bowling, some crazy jerkoff played some kind of crazy glitch on me, I couldn't join a bowling alley and for about 15 mintues.. I keep trying until I give up.. Then about two mintues later some person appear out of the bowling alley doing some kind of speical glitch that prevent me from joining the bowling alley.. When that person appear everyone laugh at me and start making jokes, they were in on it... That kind of stuff has to go..

Sony needs to get rid of the glitchs and make new rules or inforce their rules on everyone..
By WarshipAngelus at 1:29 AM ON 07/21/09
Home is a nice place to meet people and do cool things, but the jerkoffs have to go...
Also another point not bought up is the fact that most people pretend to be the other sex.. Sony needs to have a new rule that if you insulted someone while pretending to be the other sex, that person should be banned.. I can't tell you how many times guys came up to me pretending to be girls on Home.. It's just plan ridiculously annoying and lame...
That's all I'm saying...

uh shittiest headset in the world? I just bought a ps3 to play with my friend and my biggest complaint is that half the people dont even have a bluetooth headset and those that do are so staticy or horrible quality I cant understand them and the noice cancelation is so bad I can hear the person behind them breathing. The wired mic that comes with every xbox is way better then anything ive heard so far on psn so next time you should watch what you say about a system you obviously have never played online.
