Haven\'t played Demigod? Try it for free.

More than three months after its release, there's finally a demo available of Demigod, the slick real time strategy game that plays more like an action RPG. But never mind the genre. This is a great game even if you're not into wonky strategy games.

The demo will let give you a taste of the game both single player and multiplayer. You can play on one map using your choice from four of the eight demigods in the full game: Sedna, Erebus, Rook (pictured), or Regulus. I recommend Erebus. I'm just sayin'. Get the demo here from Fileplanet. Or you can install Stardock's digital distribution front end, Impulse, and download it there.

While you're downloading, browse through our Demigod game diaries, which start here. Just remember: Erebus.

Pfft! Erebus?! I'd point people towards Rook. He totally sold me on Demigod and its depth of play. Also, just for the sake of discussing Demi, I'd say Sedna currently dominates the "holy shit, how did I die?" section of Demigod discussion. She's just so innocuous until the claws come out.

In all honesty, though, all of the heroes (except, arguably, Regulus) are such interesting, fresh takes on otherwise tired fantasy archetypes that the demo is worth playing just to experience them. You won't see a castle-man with towers on his back getting chased down by an Aleut woman on a tiger anywhere else.

From my experience, there's usually a struggle to see who gets to play Regulus first. He gets more demigod kills than anyone and usually spends his time hiding in safety far behind a Beast or Rook, merrily ending the lives of opposing team mates.

My favorite is probably Rook. He's an icon, a big fat fatty, and you can either equip him with attack/speed boosts and let the hammer fall or camp out on a flag and build your defenses.

The one thing I hate about rook is that his shoulder towers' interaction with the planted towers seem do be purely graphical. There's no multiplier bonus. Talk about counter-intuitive.

The demo is apparently a FilePlanet exclusive and not on Impulse, at least for the time being. Stupid.

I agree 100%

Here's my question, 'cause I really want to love this game, and want to support Stardock while I'm at it: Is this any fun playing "single player", like against bots/AI? Or is this really a "multiplayer only" game?

@Geoff: There are bots but no SP campaign. You host a new game and fill out the slots with bots, both friendly and enemies.

Right, I get that there's no campaign, so single player is just playing against bots, my question is if that's at all satisfying.

Personally, I love playing Civ 4, with no campaign and no multiplayer, just me against the AI. Meanwhile, Sins of a Solar Empire I wanted to love, but after a few games I just had this "I've already seen everything, I'm done" feeling.

With a campaign, there's a sense of discovery - new abilities or units, new actions, new story, etc - which can hold up a game for a while, even in the absence of really fun gameplay. With multiplayer, there's the sense of competition or cooperation or socialization (is that really a word?) which again can keep a game going even absent really fulfilling interactivity.

But with a game like Civ 4, no "story campaign", no multiplayer, (at least in my case) the actual process of playing is fun enough to hold my attention. I'm wondering if this is true of Demigod as well, and hoping somebody will jump in with "Oh yeah, I play against the bots all the time, it's awesome! I'm constantly learning new things about the demigods, and the maps are really varied and fascinating." or conversely "No, the AI is terrible. On easy, it makes really stupid exploitable mistakes, and just sits around waiting to be attached. On hard, it clearly cheats, and is essentially unbeatable and frustrating".

Or I suppose, something in between.
