Dawn of Discovery: postcards from the 15th Century

Dawn of Discovery: postcards from the 15th Century

Rather than bloviate about Dawn of Discovery, the (mostly) wonderful new city builder from Ubisoft, I'm just going to use the "postcard view" to show you some of the places I've been. Above is a typical starting harbor, with a couple of fishing huts to the left, a warehouse in the center, and a harbor master's office to the right. As a city grows, this area will develop into a bustling harbor. But in the early days of a game, this is what your center of commerce looks like.

Look closely and you can see the busy fisherman. Or better yet, click the thumbnail below, which I heartily recommend. Dawn of Discovery is definitely a game that looks better fullscreen.

I really like the water reflection. The shots are reminding me of Tilted Mill titles like Ceasar and Children of the Nile. The reviews I read describe Dawn of Discovery as a Real Time Strategy game. I'm now thinking another Ubisoft title, The Settlers.

Mistake #1: Putting a harbor master's office in the same harbor location as your starting warehouse. The harbor master's office is a great building for creating another harbor trading location in a different part of your island. Many starting locations are inconvenient for trade routes, and putting a harbor master's office closer to the side facing an important resource makes shipping much quicker and more efficient.

Yeah, I'm irritated by the RTS label on this one too. I mean, it's real time, and contains strategy, but that's no more helpful than noting how most Games have you Play the Role of the main character - Max Payne is not an RPG.

RTS comparison will also leave people frustrated by the combat, which is not meant to be the game's focus. Thinking of it as a city-builder is a much better starting place.

Glad to see Tom showing it some love (more than Ubisoft does, as he noted). I adored 1701, but it was barely known at all here. I'm sad to hear it sounds like they actually stepped backwards in some ways here (like removing Annopedia) but I'm still looking forward to playing this.

Is this the game Steam refers to as Anno 1404, released 25th of June this year?

Confusion is massive!

Sadly botched Ubisoft with name here too. In Europe it is called Anno 1404 - Dawn of Discovery.. in the Us its just Dawn of Discovery. But its the same game.
