At first, the rivers in Dawn of Discovery are just a nuisance. Picturesque, sure. But they break up the islands you need to settle. Along with mountains, they mess up your building plans by getting in the way where you want to drop buildings. The even get in the way of roads. You can build a bridge over a straight length of river, but trying to get a thoroughfare over a zigzagging stream is impossible.
But later on in the game, rivers are an invaluable resource. In the orient, rivers are important as a source of fertile terrain where you can build farms without having to first set up water pumps. On your main islands, there are shallows along a river that serve as valuable sites for certain buildings. For instance, the furrier's workshop, the tannery, and the paper mill pictured above.

Tom, I'm really enjoying your Dawn of Discovery game diaries. I liked the demo of this game, but I'm seriously turned off by the Tages copy protection. Kinda feels like I'm just renting the game, ya know? You have any thoughts on this? Is the game worth the "rental"?

Every time I read "fetile", I flash back to Prince of Persia. There should be a support group or something.

I really like this series of diaries too. And I am hoping this could finally be a long waited true Sim City heir or maybe even a cool Sim City/Civilization mix. But it's still reminding me of The Settlers. (The Settlers was fine, but it was mostly puzzle solving and got repetitious after awhile.) The $50 U.S. price tag has to go too.

I like this building-farms moment. Down of discovery has pretty nice layout.
