Play Diablo 2 in high resolution and wide-screen formats

A few days ago, in the Starbucks down the street from my house, there were two guys huddled around a laptop. Call of Duty: World at War was running. You could hear the faint sounds of World War II coming from the headphones dangling around one guy's neck. "I'm schiess auffiing the fenster," he told his friend.

Today, they had a third friend along. And each of them had a laptop. They were sitting at the big table that's supposed to be reserved for handicapped folks. They were playing Diablo 2 with each other. Waves of spell effects surged across their screens. The normal people in Starbucks passing by to put milk and sugar in their coffees turned their heads to see what the colorful commotion was. There but for the grace of God (and the fact that I don't have Diablo 2 installed on my laptop) go I.

Which reminded me of this mod to run Diablo 2 in resolutions higher than 800x600, something that wasn't previously possible. You can download the files and see some comparative screenshots in this thread.

(Thanks to Tim James, who also points out that the monsters won't activate beyond the range of the game's native resolution.)

I was looking for something to do this a while back. I couldn't find anything. Thanks for pointing this out!

Now I have the urge to play it again. Thanks Tom!

I tried replaying D2 and its expansion a couple months ago when D3 was announced. I couldn't do it because the resolution was so terrible. I'll take a second look now.

FYI you can enter your cd key into the new battle.net and download your games. Nice to ditch those ancient CDs.

I just cannot get this 'patch' to work

I abandoned Diablo 2 long ago when my old PC died a horrible death, and playing it on my laptop involved peering at the tiny square in the middle of the screen to see what was going on. Maybe this will make it worth playing again.

hey this worked pretty good on xp! dang u I finally stopped playing that game and now have wasted the whole day playing again. when is d3 gonna come out?!?!?!?

For some reason, I can't get the thing to open the window for D2 in the upper left corner of the screen. As it stands, I can only support about 1152x780 res, as the window's upper left corner sits dead center on the screen. ...and there's no title bar for dragging it around.

Works great under Windows 7, thanks Tom! Looks terrific, finally going to finish this game. Maybe.

Before you install the D2MultiRes, install the latest patch under the Diablo 2 or Diablo 2 -LOD because Diablo 2 without 1.12a patch some crash probable when run the D2MultiRes!!

This patch did not work for me as it should; in the Video Options menu, there is no option at all for setting the resolution. I ended up going into the registry and forcing the change there (which did in fact then allow me to play at the resolution specified), but I'm seeing lots of gray 'bars' moving across the screen when I play now. Is this maybe a problem with Windows 7?
