June 15, 2009: wallet threat level yellow

The Ghostbusters game is a big deal for some folks, most of whom don't really care whether it plays like a conventional linear action game. They're just happy to have another Ghostbusters story with most of the original cast members involved, in whatever capacity. Having seen and played builds of the game over the last year or so, I am not one of those people. But I hope the rest of you enjoy it.

You can buy Guitar Hero: Smash Hits to bring 48 songs from previous Guitar Hero games in Guitar Hero: World Tour. Yes, Guitar Hero is now old/entrenched enough to have its own "Greatest Hits" version.

The more intriguing releases this week, which elevate the wallet threat level to yellow, include Flower, Sun, and Rain. I know only that it's a DS game from Goichi Suda, the hit-or-miss auteur responsible for Killer 7 and No More Heroes. There's also a slimmed down version of Magic the Gathering going up on Xbox Live this week. It's subtitled Duels of the Planeswalkers and it's a self-contained (!) game based on unlocking cards by playing rather than spending money in search of elusive rares.

Wizards of the Coast offering a self-contained Magic the Gathering experience for only ten bucks? That's one sign of the apocalypse down, three to go.
