The first expansion to the superhero online RPG, City of Heroes, wasn't really an expansion so much as a separate game in which you could play a bad guy. City of Villains let you play a bad guy, but only in a stand-alone companion game, with no actual interactivity with City of Heroes. The developers at NCSoft will bridge the gap between the two games in City of Heroes: Going Rogue. For the first time, hero characters can become villains and vice versa, enabling hero archetypes to cross over to the Rogue Isles™ and villain archetypes to experience Paragon City™. Clearly marked missions, in addition to behaviors and decisions made by the player, will move a hero's or villain's moral compass, which could eventually change the hero's or villain's alignment.
Throughout it's history, City of Heroes has been regularly adding new content, called "issues". But it hasn't had a major expansion since the addition of City of Villains in 2005. There's no release date yet for Going Rogue, but NCSoft obviously hopes it will be just the shot in the arm it needs later this year to stay competitive with Champions Online, another superhero online RPG launching July 14th.
