Would someone explain inertia to Joystiq's Exitebots reviewer?

Would someone explain inertia to Joystiq\'s Exitebots reviewer?

From the Joystiq review of Excitebots: Trick Racing:

It seems like Excitebots could have really benefited from MotionPlus, because it's incredibly hard to make sharp turns when going at top speed.

Pole Position could have really benefited from MotionPlus.

FPS games like Halo allow you to jump, turn in mid air, and spontaneously change the direction of your descent to whatever direction you pushed your keyboard (or joystick) towards. If game engines still allow for this clear violation of physics, why bother to decry a vehicle suddenly changing directions, neglecting further physical realities of sudden centripetal acceleration?

Tom, I love you. More calling out of lame game blogs, please? Thanks.

Depends on what the reviewer was trying to say by "sharp", but on its own that sentence isn't wrong. Once you're into simracing (i mean iRacing, rFactor, LFS, etc, not Codemasters "sims") it becomes obvious really fast how much you will benefit from increased controller resolution (ie. DFP, G25, and pro gear, as opposed to Genius and other entry level products) in making turns as "sharp" as possible (as in increased control fidelity that allows you to keep closer to the kerbs). Controller lag is another issue that's critical in simracing, and an arcade racing game would benefit from less lag (Wii MotionPlus) the same way, resulting in "sharper" turns. I'm pretty sure the reviewer meant something along that lines, and wasnt protesting the fact that inertia makes high speed turns harder.

Tom Petty, is that you?

"The other flaw that has carried over from Excite Truck is the unresponsive controls." "There's that cut-off point when you turn the Wiimote so far that it doesn't recognize your input any longer, and if you make an error during a drift or wait too long to prepare for a turn, you're going to be frustrated time and time again when you crash and burn."

Those are the sentences before and after the selected quote. I haven't played the game myself, but the fact that it's "incredibly" difficult to make sharp turns at high speed in an arcade racer (i.e. the sort of game that laughs in the face of inertia, acceleration etc.) strikes me as noteworthy.

All that being said ... wow, that disembodied clown head is seriously creepy.

Ludwig,

It is quite reasonable to expect a limitation on the turning radius of a vehicle. Unless you are playing Super Sprint in the arcade, it's reasonable to expect limitations on your input device as well like nearly every other console-based racing game ever made.

P.S. Lay off Justin McElroy and give him a severance package of Blueberry Muffin Tops.

It doesn't "fail to recognize your input", the vehicles have steering lock. It happens when you drive things that are not on casters.

My problem with the controls if that it feels like I'm not turning enough, so I turn it a bit more, still not enough, turn it a bit more, and then all of a sudden I've turned too much. That said, I think part of learning and knowing where that point is is part of the game. It's consistent, so you would eventually get accustomed to it.

Remember when everyone complained about the driving in GTA4? Now it's considered one of the greatest driving models.

Radjago,

As per your request, McElroy has been laid off, kicked to the curb with nothing but a packet of BBMTs. Given their nutritional content, I give him ... a few minutes.

As for the turning limitations, I'm certainly inclined to agree. Again, I haven't played the game myself. I merely thought that saying, "Hurr, don't you know what inertia is?!" based on that line of text was a little unfair and uncharacteristically mean.

"a little unfair and uncharacteristically mean."

Uncharacteristic? I'm guessing you don't read Tom Chick's work often? I kid cause I love.
