Can you see what's wrong with the above screenshot from STALKER, (a.k.a. the other open-world post-apocalyptic game)? Because that is not how the game is supposed to look.
The website Legit Reviews, whose names sounds like a not-so-subtle insinuation that all the other websites are wrong, paid-off, or born of unmarried parents, has written a legitimate review of what happens when you play STALKER with a Radeon HD 4000 videocard, such as the one responsible for the above screenshot: you will get rained on. In the above picture, there's supposed to be a canopy hanging over that wooden framework in the middle distance. At least, that's how it shows up on other videocards.
The particulars here might sound like whinging, but the point remains. PC gaming is as vulnerable as ever to the vagaries of various hardware and driver configurations. However, if the biggest problem you can find with a set of drivers is whether or not a canopy shows up, I figure the developers are doing pretty well.

Most often then not, if you develop software on one graphics card it won't work first time on another.
I'm a real-time graphics researcher, and I tend to use NVidia GPUs using opengl. But most of my programs will not run on ATI even though they don't use NVidia specific extentions.

Uh, kinda of a non-issue. Buried at the end of the article, the author notes that he simply switched from "Enhanced Full Dynamic Lighting" to "Enhanced Full Dynamic Lighting (DX10)" and missing canopy reappeared. Problem solved. There are far better things to complain about than this.

At least it's nothing like the last Cruiser and boss level of Crysis becoming totally unplayable on Radeon cards.
