Madden for the Wii takes a page from the Team Fortress 2 book

Madden for the Wii takes a page from the Team Fortress 2 book

Electronic Arts announces that they're going for a stylized look for the Nintendo Wii version of the next Madden game. As you can see from the screenshot up there, it's a very Team Fortress 2 approach. Will this play with football purists? Probably not, but then again, they're probably not playing Madden on the Wii.

Here's the breakdown of why each guy looks so weird:

§ Wide Receiver/Defensive Back--his tall and lean frame is indicative of his speed, agility and ability to snatch any ball that comes his way.

§ Linebacker--his solid, muscular body warns that he plans to knock your block off.

§ Quarterback--his wide shoulders and small waist emphasize the "heroic leader" look.

§ Lineman--this hulking mass lets you know he is there to stop you in your tracks.

§ Strong Safety/Running Back--his compact body features muscular thighs that convey strength and speed.

Whoever that guy is on the left, I bet he can double-jump.

"Wide receiver is not our wide receiver!!!"

I don't know anything about football, but I can't tell the difference between numbers 94, 18, and 43, so they've already failed. I assume that 18 is the quarterback because of the pose he's striking, but there's almost no difference in even the stances bewteen 94 and 43.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_number_(American_football)

The numbers are classifications for each of the players.

18 is the QB, 11 is punting, 43 is the RB/safety, 92 is DLine, 94 is linebacker.

Protip -- Football is srsly organized.

The trailer video makes it look like they just stretched the animations to the new proportions. It doesn't look good in motion.

If there was any doubt EA Sports has no damn clue what they are doing on the Wii, surely this dispels it.

Football fans aren't playing Madden on Wii because the Madden on Wii games are watered down garbage with terrible tacked on motion control. Thing is, Joe Sixpack owns a Wii (if only for his daughter) and Joe Sixpack watches NFL football. He might or might not own a 360/PS3.

If EA built a Wii Madden that was more like the Xbox/PS2 versions, with classic controller support, it'd probably do quite well. I know a number of big time sports fans, small time gamers that only own a Wii and complain about these games. Just because a game is on the Wii doesn't mean it needs terrible motion controls.

#11 Larry Fitzgerald from the Arizona Cardinals
#94 Demarcus Ware from the Dallas Cowboys
#18 Peyton Manning from the Indianapolis Colts
#92 Albert Haynesworth from the Washington Redskins
#43 Troy Polamalu from the Pittsburgh Steelers

As for similarities, that's fine. A physical SS like Polamalu is proportionally similar to a rushing LB like Ware.

And as a fan of the NFL, I think the models look nice and match up with my perceptions of the players. I think it looks fun! :)
