April 13, 2009: wallet threat level red

Slow week, right? All that's coming out is an old-school RPG, a shooter/PhysX demo, and some weird fantasy RTS, right? Well, almost.

First off, Dark Spire looks like one of those funky Atlus releases no one is going to like except for the people who really like it, and they're going to like it enough to make up for everyone who doesn't like it. Old-school Bard's Tale or Wizardry style RPGs may not be popular these days, but they're certainly a precious commodity. Just ask Etrian Odyssey, Geneforge, and Drakensang. If none of those names rings a bell, Dark Spire is not for you. Let's move on.

Cryostasis. From EA, right? About fighting Koreans, wearing a stealth suit, and then aliens at the end? The game that your computer isn't powerful enough to run? Actually, that's Crysis. Cryostasis, which has a few extra letters in the name, is from the Ukranian developers who did the Carnivore dinosaur hunter games. Nvidia seems to hope it will be a showcase for PhysX, their patented technology for crates falling over and whatnot. The game does, however, seem to support zombie punching (pictured).

Then there's Demigod. Which is single-handedly responsible for this week's wallet threat level red. You may not really have a handle on what it is. If you've been a strategy gamer long enough to know about Total Annihilation, you might confuse this for something along the lines of Total Annihilation: Kingdoms. After all, it's from Gas Powered Games, the company of the guy (Chris Taylor) who made Total Annihilation. But you'd be as wrong as you were about Cryostasis. This isn't much of a real time strategy game at all. In fact, if you don't like real time strategy games, this is the RTS for you. It's a cleverly focused action/strategy/RPG sort of thing that I highly recommend. I'll be posting more on Demigod over the next week or so. Suffice to say, it presents a clear and present danger to $39.99 in your wallet.

Also, the add-on for Saints Row 2 is due out Thursday. It's looks pretty underwhelming, but, well, it is Saints Row 2. So maybe you should put another ten bucks on high alert.
