New World of Warcraft instance adds vehicle combat

WoW_Uldaur.jpgSometimes I wish I played World of Warcraft. Like when I read about the new dungeon currently in development. Ulduar, as it's called, is a new raid instance, meaning it's a self-contained adventure for experienced groups of players.

The new dungeon actually comprises two separate raid areas. The first section is an epic battle against a vast army standing between you and the entrance of the dungeon proper...Ulduar's new master has rallied a massive iron army to guard the entrance to Ulduar and prevent any unwanted guests -- including you, especially you -- from reaching the inner sanctum. Thankfully, you'll be able to face the Iron Army on even footing: a small fleet of siege vehicles will be on hand to aid you in the assault. You and your friends will have to use these vehicles wisely to break through Ulduar's defenses. A mix of Choppers, Demolishers, and Siege Engines will be at your disposal, each granting unique abilities to the pilot and the passenger.

Once you've plowed through the innumerable ranks of the iron army, you will be confronted by an enormous tank. Mimiron built the Flame Leviathan as part of the V0-L7R-0N weapons platform, and as a result, this tank packs quite a punch. Normal spells and abilities won't be enough to take down this juggernaut, so you'll have to rely on your siege vehicles to outmaneuver and defeat the boss. After wearing down the massive war machine, you will have to launch players onto the tank's back to destroy its defense turrets and sabotage the Leviathan before you can move on.

That all sounds pretty cool, but in the interest of engaging in the usual "my MMO is better than your MMO", I have to wonder how it stacks up next to a Balrog in Lord of the Rings Online.

Ulduar is currently in development and Blizzard says it'll go live on test servers soon. You can read more details here.

"V0-L7R-0N" weapons platform? Gee, I wonder what that could possibly be a reference to?!

V0L7R0N DEFENDER OF THE UNIVERSE!

You can start playing EVE online but not WoW? Really?

There's been vehicle combat in the game in Wintergrasp and in at least one of the dailies (although what's cool is that the other side often times doesn't realize you can shoot them) There's also dragon combat in Oculus, a 5 man dungeon. So this is just an extension of that.

The WoW vehicle combat is neat, but it's not particularly interesting. It's basically like playing a mini-game in Saints Row 2 (as far as its depth). I imagine in Dungeons it's more like a little mini class you play for that encounter.

It's pretty much popcorn style novelty.

U guys obviously don't play much wow vehicle combat is all over the place in northrend it was one of the major selling points for wotlk

I did buy and play WotlK Bacongrease and that was my impression of solo and pvp vehicle combat. I never ran Occulus, but from what I overhead (and based on other dungeons that change your class temporarily), it's basically a novelty experience without a lot of depth.

Yes true vehicle combat is all over in WoTLK.
In fact it's so often that you want to scream: "We got the point already Blizzard: You managed to add vehicle combat! Wow! Now let's do something else ok?"

And this is coming from someone that plays the game since 2004...
