While reading Variety's coverage of the non-announcement revelation of a possible videogame tie-in with the new Tron movie (which is variously called TRON 2, TRON 2.0, and TR2N), I recognized the name of the movie's director, Joseph Kosinski, but wasn't sure where I'd heard it. He's never made a feature film before, and a quick check online revealed he's a commercial director.
But his name is familiar because he's the guy behind two of the best-known videogame ads. The "Mad World" commercial for Gears of War, which used Gary Jules' plaintive cover of the Tears for Fears song from Donnie Darko, began a new style of juxtaposing emo music and action-packed games. And the "Starry Night" teaser for Halo 3 (pictured) was the first in Microsoft's line-up of weirdly irrelevant musings as a way of advertising Halo 3.
So while Kosinski may not have experience with feature films, videogamers will recognize that he's got experience coming up with thoughtful and unexpected new twists. You can check out Kosinski's work, including the two videogame ads, here.

Good lord, I can't believe I did that. Thanks for the correction!...More »
