Call of Duty 4 is really impressive on the first play-through. Which will take 6 hours. Multiplayer is very interesting, but not particularly deep. Much like CoD2, it's a hopped-up, less technical Counterstrike. But the singleplayer doesn't hold up. After your first play-through the world IW created starts to show its seams; playing on difficulties above normal may be one of the most unfun things you can do in a videogame. Yeah, the narrative is good for a videogame, but like I've said earlier, if I wanted to watch Blackhawk Down I could just do that. But hey, don't take this as my saying you're not entitled to your opinion, just be consistent -- if killboxes, linear gameplay and brown/gray levels are bad, then they're ALWAYS bad. Mind you, I think you're one of the least offenders on this -- it's particularly egregious in the 'CoD:WaW is not a IW game' reviews.

For someone who was not going to write a review of the game, you managed to write a review of the game that trashed it. It seems to me that almost every review on this site is hyper-critical and negative. Apparently, Fidgit has turned to an old tactic to set itself apart from other critical websites: trash everything no matter what just to show you are different and independent of the "pack."
Next time, wait until you have total access to a finished game and complete it before you tear it apart. What Mr. Chick did is no different than critics who trash movies before they come out simply because they can to get attention.

I find it puzzling how people thing trashing a game automatically becomes the formal review he promised he would not write. This is not a review, and as the reader, I don't take it as such. Were it a formal review, it would be poorly done... which is why Tom said it wasn't a review. These are his thoughts on why he doesn't want to finish the game. These thoughts constitute impressions, but not a review, and he knows and acknowledges that his piece is not a review.

But... you can take advantage of his slight gaffe in filing the post under "Reviews" and call it a review if it makes you feel that much better about complaining about it. You know, if your little heart so desires.

I'm not fond of the notion that in order for writing to be a real review it must be 1000 words, hit upon a checklist of features and come stamped with a number or letter that interfaces conveniently with the Metacritic scale. Zero Punctuation clips are reviews. Joe Bob Briggs' in-character columns were reviews. Caesar's thumbs down after a gladiatorial match were reviews. And to be honest, all of the reviews I mentioned are more interesting, stimulating and exciting than the rote, bullet-pointed write-ups. As ever, Chick, I admire your writing and your willingness to publicly air an unpopular opinion. Weren't readers just a second ago complaining that too many critics jump on the bandwagon and heap love, blindly on games?

I'm looking forward to giving Killzone 2 a fair chance myself, if only to see what my own personal opinion is going to be like. Having said that, though, I do appreciate the criticisms that you brought up, and I will most definitely keep them in mind whilst playing through the final build when it is released at the end of February.

Hm... After a link on Penny Arcade regarding the vitriolic comments aimed at the review, we've reached a level of meta-commentary that makes me wonder if posts like Urabitch's come from folks actually enraged at the review, or just PA readers who feel inspired to add to the spectacle. Conundrum!

So, due to Penny Arcade I wandered down this direction to check this thing out, and I couldn't help laugh a bit. Not at Mr. Chick's opinion piece (because that is what it is. Any refusal to accept is nothing short of delusion.) but at the pure vitrol and hate of the comments section. People leaping forward to defend something they've never played, something not even released from the commentary of a man who has, indeed, played it. People declare others 'xbots' among other much worse things for not adhering to the Playstation Religion.

For example, writing this, I'm going to be assaulted and insulted verbally, which nothing really bothersome to me; when the peanut gallery is firing real lead past my head, then I'll start worrying. In the meantime, the whine of an internet flamer will not be the same as the whine of a bullet. But regardless of how little this will affect me, I will be insulted and branded a 'fanboy' of the xbox because of my audacity to defend the right to separate opinions.

To those of you who cry 'foul!' at this non-review piece, remember that this is but one of many out there, most of which are gently playing the song of consent and agreement with your own opinion. If that is all you want, go there. If you truly do want to hear the negative opinions, the tough thoughts, then do look for other places. I know when I look at reviews (which I seldom do anymore; so many of them are steeped in themselves or in the producer's money..) I look for the BAD ones. Why? Because they'll tell me the truth. The 10/10 over at SuperGameReviews for "Superhappyfuntime with Nukes!" Tells me absolutely nothing. The 2.5/5 at Gamerhaterz will tell me everything I ever wanted to know about the game. I'm glad to see someone offer an *opinion* on a game for once, instead of the clinical bullet-point analysis that most publications offer.

I've not played Killzone yet myself, but this article seems to reiterate the sense I've gotten from the trailers and footage I've seen so far (that the level design is unimaginative - though that's hardly a fault exclusive to Killzone), so it'll probably go on my rental list rather than my shopping list.

As one of the aforementioned Norwegians who also master English somewhat, I have to say that this opinion piece is very much in the same spirit as the review at gamer.no. A review that received about 800 comments filled with so much hate and trolling the thread got locked. From what I have seen of videos and pictures, this article confirmed my suspicions about the game, technically impressive but utterly empty of content.

I lost 10 IQ points that I direly need after reading this trash. No doubt trying to get hits over controversy because no one could honestly say what you did and mean it. You clearly have alternative motives for this, shock value hits, job at MS, or you want to try and be that cool kid in the girl pants who hates on something that became popular to try and be different while crying on face book. There's a reason why you don't do reviews, and that's because nobody would take them seriously filled with idiotic statements and thesis. Guys, just because it's a critical 'review', dosn't mean it's a good 'review' and just because others call it great dosn't make them bad 'reviews'. Just wait till you get the game and THEN start your flaming. From the reviews I've read, they do agree with the non-inventive terrian, but they say instead that the levels are presented so well, that you wouldn't care :p I mean, who cares if the levels aren't unique? I play FPS's to shoot things, not admire the scenery. And he DID say it had a good (I'm assuming this from what he wrote) combat system and amazing graphics. And the multiplayer sounds great. So let's all cool it guys, please?

I've only played the demo, but it seems that Mr. Chick's lead complaint is that the cross hair is not at eye level, but rather at gun level (which is probably more realistic). If you're going to devote that many words to a fairly trivial complaint and do it in such an infantile way, you've devoted the lead to a rant and you're intentionally creating a flame war.

Your take on Killzone 2 sounds plausible enough. Everything I have seen of it so far screams "just another FPS, exactly like every FPS you have previously played".

The part I don't get is, how the FUCK can you praise Far Cry 2? That game is so tedious and repetitive it makes Halo 3 look like fine art (and no, Halo 3 is not a good game either).

Games today are so predictable and formulaic that you can review them without ever playing them and still reach 99% accuracy.

Like Killzone 2. I haven't played it, yet I know exactly what it's like. The FPS genre has been stuck in the same damn formula since the first Halo. All they're doing is re-skins of the same damn game for the fiftieth time, and once you've played one, you've played them all.

I appreciate the article, I kind of had this weird feeling about Killzone 2, like I heard that it's great but I didn't hear why. Every FPS needs some spectacular stuff nowadays to make it unique. I hear stuff about Fallout 3, Bioshock, even Mass Effect, and I realize they're not a typical FPS and sound quite fun. I remember when I first learned about Gears of War and Halo and Battlefield 1942 - all something never done before. But I still don't understand what the "thing" is with Killzone 2, and maybe this reviewer is wrong, but what is so good about Killzone 2 anyways? I'm still skeptical but I'm going to read some reviews and see if I can find out what's really going on.

Have to say, based on the Beta - Killzone 2 is ok, it's not great, but it's ok. Nothing entirely wrong with that - but it's not the great hope that PS3 owners are waiting for. I think it's better than Halo 3 in it's way, it has more 'charm', but in terms of playability it's not nearly as good as the recent CoD releases.

I didn't really like the first game too much, so I probably won't like this one either. Probably coz I'm more into RPGs and Action/Adventure then FPS. How is the combat, Mr. Chick? Funny, but you just reviewed an FPS, games designed around shooting people, and you never once told us how that felt. You vaguely refered to it as a 'prosaic Call of Duty' type of feel, but never went into any real detail aside from the occasional exploding barrel or electronic spider. If I am playing an FPS, then it is NOT for the scenery, as pretty as that may or may not be. And by your own words, the game was gorgeous, the most advanced on the PS3. How many 'new and original' levels to do you expect from the industry now? If it does what it is supposed to do and delivers to me an enjoyable first person shooter experience, I couldn't care one iota less if the damn train never leaves the STATION, let alone doesn't come out of a tunnel.

I suggest you stop for the moment. One of this games biggest draws is supposed to be its multiplayer, and you couldn't review that. So instead you satisfied yourself with trashing the single player experience. Good job jumping on the 'lets review the game early, before we've experienced it all!' all bandwagon and tossing in your own special flavor of 'and trash it for doing what other FPS's do, only prettier'.

I gotta admit, I played the demo for this after the Resi 5 and FEAR 2 Demos and ended up kinda sitting there with no opinion.

Its got GREAT Graphics but is so massively generic from what I've seen that I can't really give an opinion. Nor can anyone who's not played it all.

All consoles exclusives are going to be a bit crap. Halo 3 is only really fun when you’re with friends in the same room (and usually assisted with our friend mister alcohol). I never really took to gears of war. Fable 2 was quite fun but too short. Admittedly I don’t have a PS3, never could afford it. But it does strike me that this game could be a bit bland single player wise (But aren’t many fps' nowadays).
The fact is that most console exclusives don't even need to be that great. Most of their sales will be from enraged fanboys who'll defend it to the end because it’s an exclusive.

I help run a biannual LAN in central Arkansas. I have to say, hands down, COD4 has dominated our NON tournament events. The single player may be short, but it's really just the cherry on top of a really fun multiplayer game.

What's a Killzone?

Overrated game is overrated. At this point in our time line of video-games, after thousands of first-person shooters, innovation really is necessity, and this game doesn't create ANYTHING.

I don't understand this sudden reviewer obsession with labelling all FPS games as "unoriginal", "uncreative" or "unengaging". It's happening a lot lately, to a lot of titles, across every system. If I had to guess, I'd say that reviewers are coming down off their shameless hype high after Halo 3, and have become cynical and jaded about the entire genre.

p.s. I realise the forseable accusations of hyppocriticism in judging what people have said using the "freedom of speach" thing and would like anyone who would bring this up to fuck off and die.

I was captured by the Killzone 2 trailer 2 years ago.

It caught me and held me to a type of game play i didnt think i had ever seen before. Problem: that was 2 years ago. Halo3, Gears of War2, and CoD2 have moved passed this "wow" feeling.

I think thats one of the things the reviewer here was hinting at... Killzone 2 would have been WOW.... 2 years ago.

This is probly because the majority of FPS games that have emerged recently are unoriginal and uncreative (hence unengaging.) Par exampleh, Halo 3 was the most unoriginal, uninspired.. sucky game evaar, the majority of shooters follow the same line of grit, space marines and/or Battlefield-like style.
COD4 manages as the gameplay works well and it has interesting innovative features and a fairly original storyline, fun (if limited) multiplayer. Halo is wank. CSS is little more than a port with updated graphics but it keeps going because it is incredibly fun online.
IMO a lot of the shooters coming out want to be like this but cannot.. console controls for one thing.

I own both consoles and believe they both have their flaws. That said, this is a HORRIBLE "non-review." It has little substance and seems like the notes from a comedy standup routine. (I'm not laughing.) We want to be informed. An official review or preview or opinion should inform first, entertain second. However, the later is optional..... I like FPS, but come on.. non of them are very original... There are very few original games out there... Developers are forced to choose sales over creativity of find some (near) balance. I digress. What if X-Play, IGN, Gamespot, 1Up and others gave "reviews" or opinions on games that they didn't finish? The fact that you can so easily sum them up, & the developers seem eager to do that too, makes me think that yes, they are unoriginal.

This game has a cover mechanism: this one does not: this game has a chain saw & this one has an ax & this one has a shotgun & this one has a force sword & let's be fucking honest, they are all just high damage close range weapons that work almost identically. If the game doesn't have a cover mechanism it has a high powered recharging armor mechanism.

Most of these games are the same. Identical themes, identical concepts, but hey, we have a cover mechanism and a lazer axe or we have a cover mechanism & a lazer sword or we have a cover mechanism and a lazer shotgun.........

I tend to agree with the criticisms here, but these are the same criticisms that can be applied to every FPS outside of a valve game. I get why FarCry2 gets a free pass.(non-linear, but also no pacing or variety) but why give one to CoD4?

Me, I'm a graphics whore so this is worth at least a rent for the graphics and maybe a buy for the multiplayer. (I've heard good things, but I don't think it'll top Resistance 2's multiplayer)

Interesting write-up. I had only the mildest, buy-it-when-it's-$30-or-less interest this game, because while I do own a PS3, I really don't like playing shooters with a controller. I bought Halo 2 on launch day and never finished it because Half-Life 2 came out and I never went back.

Actually, in all seriousness, some of you DEFINITELY need to go back to school. Too much time playing video games and too little natural brainpower is a perfect recipe for ignorance like this. I'm not saying video games are bad; I'm saying that you should learn how to spell and compose sentences before you allow yourself to spend anywhere between five and fifty hours playing a video game to its conclusion. Those are important life skills.

Excellent piece, Tom. I don't understand the backlash from all the comments. The fact that a flagship Sony title has fallen flat on its face should be a surprise to absolutely no-one at this point. That's not to say I'll never play it. The key to enjoying a lackluster game is to go in with zero expectations. That said, I went into both Resistance games with less than zero expectations, and still came out feeling dumber for having played them.

I am going to actually believe Mr. Chick's assessment of this game. This won't stop me from buying it, didn't stop me from buying call of duty 4,5, Haze and Resistance 2. With the exception of Bioshock and maybe far cry 2 for its open world elements, every FPS title released in some time has been pretty similar. Even Crysis was just a good looking mostly standard FPS which suffers from much of what is written in this review.

People constantly struggle with the concept of intellectual honesty these days. Some of us have been playing FPS titles since Wolfenstein and Doom and are fairly saturated in terms of what experiences move us. I will get Fear 2, even though I know it will feature retreaded environments and little innovation outside of the tense atmosphere.

Many of you who support Tom have missed the mark. Mr. Chick is not writing about Sony, he is writing about Killzone 2. This is not an indictment of any video game company, merely a statement of the quality of one individual FPS game.

One of the reasons I liked the original Halflife so much is that they gave you some very inventive opponents to deal with in some very distinct setting. I'm glad I didn't let the luke-warm reviews for Mirror's Edge stop me from playing the game, because I absolutely love it.

My advice, for whatever little it's worth, is to stay away from reviews and just try a game before you judge.

Owning neither a 360 nor a PS3, I don't get a chance to play any major console games unless I go over to a friend's place. But the level of fanboy-ism on both sides (the PS3 fanboys are the worst offenders, IMO) is just sickening and laughable.
Why do the 360 fans need to attack this game? It's not coming to their console, sure, but it won't affect any other games' releases or successes. And why do the PS3 owners need to attack back? It's not like they can do anything to stop the game from being good or coming out on its release date.
I could be way off with this, but I think the PS3 people are excited that such a popular, hotly anticipated, and quite possibly good game is coming exclusively to them instead of the 360. And maybe they feel like they have to defend this so vigorously the foam from their mouths is reaching me across the internet. Maybe the 360 owners are jealous that a good game isn't coming to their precious console and they have to feel like they're better and so they attack the game. Maybe PS3 owners are taking this chance to shine by taking a dump on everyone else and shoving good reviews in our face and taking down the bad ones (or in the case of Adam Sessler, taking down the good ones as well).

But that's just my opinion.

Sounds about right from my experience with the demo. I think GG spent all of their time and budget trying to meet that target trailer that they forgot to do anything else, like smoother, tight controls, interesting game content. Ya know, the rest of the stuff that makes a good game. Sadly, I'm probably still going to buy it because I'm absolutely starved for something to play on PS3. But, it has been moved to the "cut if necissary list" on my gaming budget.

I personally think that the PS3 (overall) is an over-rated and over-priced machine with games priced well and truly out of the average person's price bracket. $110 AU for a game that lasts you 5 - 20 hours? Well, likely because from everything i've read on killzone 2 it is much more akin to Call of Duty 4 then Gears of War 2.

Having played Gears of War 2 and Call of Duty 4, i can say that in my opinion they are nothing alike except that they are both FPS. So i don't imagine they are practically the same.

Even though he hasn't been able to test the multiplayer capability. He did not say "Personally, this game just does not appeal to me. On the whole it amounts to another, visually superior FPS that just doesn't keep my attention. However you may find it enjoyable for what it is." That I would have respected, and it would have come off as a 'negative' review for Killzone 2. Or even something similar to that, wrapped in his humor. Instead, we get a fairly weak 'Uh, this doesn't go anyplace new. I got bored.' He never once talked about the game play, aside from calling it a 'prosiac CoD4.' How is the cover system? Does it work? Is it functional, or just clunky? Is it ENJOYABLE to kill things? For full disclosure, I will admit that I tease a couple of PS3 owners I know when Sony cock something up (yes I have a 360), but I don't think I've ever got to the full on screaming mode.

It is comment strings like this that remind me why I hate fanboys/girls. So you thought KZ2 was a disappointment, ok no big deal, just one opinion. Reading your review, I couldn't help but be reminded of the kids in high school who had neon pink mowhawks or wore all black clothes with black nail polish and tons of eyeliner. Sure, they might be cool people, but their incredibly thinly veiled attempt at being blatantly different made it impossible to take them seriously. You have passed judgment on Killzone 2 here, and you state you didn't enjoy it. But in the past you have praised Far Cry 2, without a doubt one of the most astoundingly generic FPSs of all time (albeit with a sweet map editor). From an outside standpoint, I can't possibly take you seriously after that.

I love how one person's opinion can cause an e-riot. From playing the KZ2 demo I've found nothing to disagree with in this non-review, so I suppose I should expect a few bricks through my window soon. I'll rent the game when it comes out, although I'm not hopeful my opinion will change.

I've played one shooter. Or ten. I got over shooters about five years ago. I can get head shots. I can frag npcs and other players. I can teabag with the best of them. After awhile, it got really, really boring.

So, to the people up there who say "What did you expect!? The scenery has nothing to do with the gameplay" let me say to you it has EVERYTHING to do with any even vague interest I have in playing the game. How are you people not bored with shooters yet? It's the same thing over, and over, and over, and over again, and sometimes, if you're very lucky, you'll view the game from over the character's shoulder instead of as a floating camera with no feet.

Hey guys, this isn't a review, there's no real detail on the actual game, just a "play at your own risk of disappointment" disclaimer. I clicked on this over at PA expecting some actual juicy details about what was wrong with it - but sadly, this is just a desperate attempt at grabbing site hits and media attention for being the black sheep.

Yes, I own a PS3, and no, I wasn't going to buy this. Shooters belong on the PC - the best of which are Serious Sam+TSE, Half-life series, and Painkiller. No particular order.

Uhh, Tom has opinions coupled with a writing style that are somewhat unorthodox compared to the mainstream websites. Even his freelance work on some of those sites is very different than their regular reviewer lineup.

If you've ever read those reviews, you would realize that this isn't Tom scrounging for page hits... this IS Tom, and it's precisely this type of approach to game reviewing that draws in readers.

Much respect to Tom for allowing us to leave comments. Certainly an entertaining review.

I think the most intriguing comments in this cesspool of idiocy (with brief, bright spots of amusing meta-commentary on this whole sordid ordeal) are the comments claiming that this is the first "unpaid" Killzone 2 review. Because, clearly, only the reviewers who are getting paid off by Sony would ever dare give this game a positive review, right? Hilarious the depths to which some people's delusions will take them.

In any case, this post got me to subscribe to Tom's RSS, so I suppose that's something positive.

i dislike fanboyism but it is rife within these comments for both sony and microsoft, however as soon as you gave far cry 2 such high regard your words are almost worthless...

I suppose if this was an xbox game people would love it no matter what. It's also funny how nobody waited for MGS4 to come out to review the MGO part of the game. And scored it without considering that as well. Oh well.

I actually might not pick up Killzone 2 now. The reviews I've seen are overly positive. Which just doesn't fit. You could tell HL2 was gonna be great cuz we knew about the gravity gun and the unique setting, etc. There's nothing about this game that looks original. So how could it be the best FPS ever? I'll wait and see with this. If there are enough good reviews that are actually reviews and not giddy love fests I might pick it up.

So what does Killzone 2 bring? A completely different feel from COD4 et al. Brilliant hit detection and animation. The best AI I've seen in a game (diving into cover, working in squads, moving all the time) funny you didn't mention that...

Not everyone's gonna like it, but I do. There'll be enough people in the (actually awesome) multiplayer to keep me satisfied for a long time.

Glad someone is finally coming out with some true aspects. I absolutely agree about the bad voice acting, the annoying XP system in multiplayer and the lack of real unique environments.

Although I wouldn't go as far as saying this game isn't worth playing.

I wasn't too fond of the PS2 game. I played my fucking brains out with playing the PSP version (and still lovin' it). And I'm still having fun with the demo of Killzone 2. I find the game to play incredibly smooth, which I find rare to see/feel in games nowadays.

Killzone 2 is definitely not the best game evarrr. But certainly is a pretty and action-packed one. Most definitely am I buying this game for the awesome soundtrack it has. (Still hoping they're going to release a OST CD.) But probably also just to support my fellowed Dutch game developers.

Honestly, it's a "Like it or not" game. Pretty much like Far Cry 2. (which, in my honest opinion, is one of 2008's worst games) And I wish people would just accept that, rather than trying to stab a knife into people's backs until they change their opinion. But, c'est la vie.

Don't worry. Tom is doing something that we can't do without people like him. Sparking interest. Whether he likes it or not, he has created a monster. Of couse, not that he cares, he has lost all of his credibilty. Just don't let a few pieces of negativity for the attention whores ruin what will be a great experience. 44 reviews on metacritic. 40 of them are above 90%. I think we can assume that this is going be be a stellar experience and multiplayer that we can play for months on end.

I think the response to the EDGE 7/10 review of Killzone 2 applies here:

I agree with Tom Chick. If you do not own a PS3 or like shooters, you should not buy Killzone 2. Just not worth it in that case.

That was nicely written - I especially got a kick out of your last paragraph, as I wrote something very similar in a my review of Need For Speed LA on Space Meat. (I won't copy and paste it here - but google it if you're interested)

I've only played the demo of the game, and I can't wait until I can get my hands on the full version. It looks great, plays great, and feels great. Sure, the backgrounds are a little bland, but so are the backgrounds in 75% of the backgrounds in games released last year, and some of them were even up for GOTY. But I could see your objections; since the game does nothing that acts like you (i.e. screams attention whore), nor is on the 360, you feel the need to bash it relentlessly in your non-review review.

I also like the line "This is an impressive engine and the graphics are - I think I'm prepared to go ahead and say this - the most technically impressive I've seen on the Playstation 3.", as if all PS3 titles look like N64 games. Not even one of the best, if not the best, looking game to date. I'm not sure if it was sarcasm, but anyone with a pair of eyes can tell that this is a gold standard for games visually. Hell, it looked good on a TV that made Halo 3 look like a PS2 game.

This is a funny review. Negative for all the wrong reasons though.

And did you realize all of you who havent played killzone 1 that when your holding the ISA rifle you have your right hand on a grenade launcher that has been rendered useless/ or shotgun with helghast. This was the differance between the two factions....Really Silly to take that out.
