I marked my calendar today because it was the day bidding closed on the "hitman" gamertag for Xbox Live being sold on eBay. Last I checked, the bid was at $200. How high would it get by the time it was over?
So I signed into eBay and discovered the auction was closed. c|net's Daniel Terdiman reports that eBay closed it on the grounds that it won't traffic in virtual items. Apparently, the seller then tried to auction a memory card with the profile downloaded onto it. Ah, very clever! Or maybe not, since c|net slapped down that auction as well. So the seller went to -- where else? -- Craig's list. You can see how he fared there by clicking the link to his post.
And to think, the "hitman" gamertag could have been passed along to someone who would cherish it enough to give it a gamerscore higher than 4000 measly points. Terdiman notes that the bidding had reached $500 before the auction was closed, which just proves the old axiom that some people have more money than sense.

You don't have a cached version of that Craigslist page perhaps? It was flagged with a quickness.

Congratulations, Mr. Parker, you just discovered how well the auction fared on Craig's list. :)

Ebay doesn't traffic in virtual items? Since when? You can find WoW accounts, EQ accouts, and probably some Diablo 2 items on Ebay. Something tells me there's more to this than Ebay is saying.

I have to disagree with the decisions of these auction houses. I can understand the decision not to allow auctions or the selling of virtual commodities that can simply be copied and replaced (like software)But that's not the case for this. If I want to sell my access to a tag or screen name or whatever I should have the right to do so

Well, Bailey people who disagree with eBay et al should link up with those people who have the VC to start up an auction house for virtual items. Does second life have a marketplace, or is that one limited to stuff in SL? Seriously, I see lots of spam in gamer related gmail about various virtual stuff for sale (WoW gold and the like), I'm really surprised there isn't a legitimate clearing house for this sort of stuff by now.

D'oh! And here I was hoping for one of the classic whining CL posts, the kind that CL's "best of" is made of.
O! I am fortune's fool!
