Flower blows where it will, and you're along for the ride

Flower_review.jpg

The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
--John 3:8
This isn't going to be much of a review, because Flower isn't much of a game. And I mean that as the highest possible compliment. It's got some of the trappings of a game, and it's available for download from the Playstaton Network next to a lot of other games. Blah blah number of levels, blah blah Sixaxis controller, blah blah graphics. But that's simply not what Flower is. It's more like interactive artwork that takes you...well, you're better off not knowing where.

The question posed is "What do flowers dream about?" And the answer, surprisingly, is not what you would expect. Flower is the victory of renewal over ruin, of the power of grace, light, and color, over strength and darkness. This is not an epic story, like Okami. It's intimate and quiet. And it ends with a delicate narrative twist that colors the whole thing. Whose dream is this? It's a stupid question, really. You have to be a little pretentious to try to articulate what Flower is about once it's over. It's a little ineffable. I've already said too much.

It's sublime and brief, easily playable in one sitting. Make sure you're in a quiet room, or at least wearing headphones. And consider sharing it with someone you love: a child, a wife, a mother. The two of you deserve it.

One of the reasons I'd buy a PS3, but it's far too short to be worth the cost. Oh and Noby Noby Boy.

Can something be "a little" ineffable?

You wrote article when you meant articulate.

"You have to be a little pretentious to try to article what Flower is about once it's over."

Anyone who has yet to experience this game is short something fantastic. And I do mean experience over play.

Either I need to get myself a PS3 (not just for this, but other things as well), or I need to hope and pray that this eventually gets ported, which it probably won't.
