The nominations for the Writers Guild Awards for videogame writing were announced today. If you go to the WGA site's list of nominees and scroll down...keep going...down...down past the daytime serials...down past radio documentaries...keep going...past promotional writing...you'll find the space for the videogaming writing nominees, which aren't pasted in yet at the time of this blog entry.
So I'll just spoil it for you: Red Alert 3, Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble, Fallout 3, Force Unleashed, and Tomb Raider: Underworld. You're probably scratching your head, too. And not just because you haven't played Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble.
There are rules about WGA jurisdiction, and game scripts have to be submitted, so there's no telling what kind of voodoo goes into these awards. Also, consider that this is only the second year for this category. Was last year's winner BioShock? Portal? Uncharted: Drake's Fortune? Nope. None of them were even nominated. Instead, top honors went to Dead Head Fred (pictured). You've probably never heard of it. It was for the PSP. It was a sort of action adventure thing about a dude who could swap heads to solve different puzzles and whatnot. It was cute, sure. But worthy of an award from the Writers Guild of America? Uh...

Wait... isn't nominating Red Alert 3 for a writing award a sign of the end times?
I mean it's great in it's own explosion centric parachuting beartastic way.
But I don't think anybody sat down in that meeting and said "Alright guy's, let's write the Hamlet of gaming!"

Dead Head Fred was AWESOME. Dr. Cox swears in it!

Yeah, after Dead Head Fred, I was kind of hoping we'd be seeing more John C. McGinley voiceovers in videogames. Sadly, it doesn't seem to have panned out.

Is John C. McGinley the Commissioner of the More Taste League?

John C. McGinley is everywhere. Everywhere, I tell you! So, yes, he is probably the Commissioner of the More Taste League, whatever that is.
