Last week, Microsoft closed the studio responsible for their lucrative and venerable Flight Simulator franchise. But the series will go on. According the PC Magazine article:However, a Microsoft spokeswoman said that while the studio has been closed, the software company remains committed to the Flight Simulator franchise, without explaining how future products can be launched without a dedicated software development team backing them.
Probably the same way they'll remain committed to, say, the Halo franchise.
I used to be really into flight simulators, but it's a demanding hobby. It takes patience, dedication, and time that might otherwise be spent playing shooters, real time strategy games, and MMOs. And these days, flight sims are apparently demanding in some new ways. I found this helpful article listing various add-ons to improve Flight Simulator X, the latest in the series. The add-ons offer new terrain, new effects, and even a new front end for setting up weather. But every single one of the add-ons is a commercial product being sold by a third party. It seems the Flight Simulator franchise isn't just lucrative for Microsoft.
