Rise of the Argonauts to lift its Greek head in time for Christmas

Rise_early_release.jpgWait, hold the presses, 2008 isn't over yet, at least in terms of big releases. For whatever reason, the Greek-themed RPG Rise of the Argonauts has suddenly gone from being a 2009 release to a December 16, 2008 release. Uh, let me check my watch. Yikes! That's, like, next week! That's not much advance notice, fellas.

On one hand, I'm glad to see a new game from Liquid Entertainment, the talented creators of under-appreciated real time strategy games like Dragonshard , Battle Realms, and even a half-way decent Lord of the Rings RTS called War of the Ring. They also did a Desperate Housewives game that, for all I know, might not have sucked. I was really impressed with their Rise of the Argonauts presentation at E3. They seem to have set up for themselves a really nice target between God of War and Baldur's Gate. I'm hoping for a more polished version of this year's Viking: Battle for Asgard game (speaking of under-appreciated).

Unfortunately, it's rarely a good sign when a release date ping-pongs around as much as it has for Rise. And I'm skeptical that a last-minute under-the-wire release barely in time for Christmas is anything but bad news.

That LotR RTS is more or less a Warcraft III skin. But this looks good.

Nah, War of the Ring and even WarCraft III in a lot of aspects could be called Battle Realms skins. Know which RTS classic came first.;)

This looks very good, too bad every site seems to think 2008 ended two weeks earlier than normal with all those lists...

Well by the transitive property of game reduction then, LotR, War of the Ring, WarCraft III, and Battle Realms can all be considered Dune 2 skins. Dune 2 (or Herzog Zwei, but that's a different and even more boring debate) is pretty much just a mod of any SSI turn-based wargame (they're all skins of each other) which are all just SpaceWar skins with hacks applied for more ships.

SpaceWar is really just an oscilloscope skin though if you think about it, and an o-scope is a vacuum tube mod. Vacuum tubes are just a sequel to evacuated tubes like Thomas Edison worked on.

So really that LotR RTS is just another Edison invention. Know your classic 19th century video game developers. ;)

I first heard of this through the Titan Quest community. I think it could be really good, but I agree that the "rush it out the door in time for Christmas" move seems really sketchy.

I'm going to have to see some reviews before buying this one.
