December 8, 2008: wallet threat level green

Wallet_threat_level_Persona_4.jpgThere is no threat to your wallet this week unless you're into Japanese RPGs, in which case you might consider elevating the threat level to orange (pcitured). If you're into the Shin Megami Tensei series (if you have to ask what "Shin Megami Tensei" is, you're not), consider elevating the threat level to a bright red.

Persona 4, for the Playstation 2*, is the latest in the series of RPGs that includes the various Nocturnes, Digital Devil Summoners, and Personas. In this game, a group of schoolchildren save the world while doing their homework. At least that's how Persona 3 worked. You had to balance the day-to-day life of a schoolboy with the nightly dungeon spelunking he did with his pals. It was like The Sims mashed up with an action RPG, with the vibe of a weirdly dark Final Fantasy. But Persona 4 takes place out in the countryside, so I figure the kids might be out of school for the summer, giving them more time to spelunk randomly generated dungeons.

I haven't tried this sequel yet, but it's not the sort of thing you can offer an informed opinion about until you've spent 10+ hours playing. These games unfold slowly. But they have a devoted following and the buzz for Persona 4 is very good so far, with the obvious caveat of "if you're into that sort of thing".

* That is not a typo.

"the buzz for Persona 4 is very good so far"

It has a 97 metacritic rating based on 10 reviews so far. And I don't know why you are guessing at the plot of Persona 4, there are roughly a bajillion previews/reviews out.
