December 1, 2008: wallet threat level green

Vampyre.jpgThere are no substantial threats to your wallet this week. It's possible the new Prince of Persia with its cell-shaded look (not pictured; that's something else), new combat system, and hot chick sidekick is just the reboot the series needs. But with a new Tomb Raider having coming out last week, the "pulling levers, dangling from ledges, and fighting/shooting bad guys" genre is a bit glutted, sort of like when you release two asteroid movies at the same time.

The PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV is out this week. If it's possible for Liberty City to look any better, this is where it will happen. The PC version has a video playback feature that will let folks re-admire those "Whoa, did you see that?" moments, and then save them for posterity. The more enterprising among us can even make machinima shorts like the samples Rockstar provided, viewable here and here. But unless you're one of those PC-only holdouts, I can think of a far better way to play though Grand Theft Auto IV again. It's called Saints Row 2.

After numerous delays, THQ is finally releasing their latest Destroy All Humans game, but only for the Xbox 360. Note that THQ recently shuttered the development studio that actually made the game. Speaking of recently shuttered, the last game from the now defunct Brash Entertainment is supposed to be out this week, but I'll believe it when I see it. Tale of Despereaux is the tie-in to the new mouse movie, due out two weeks before the movie itself opens. I suspect you'd have a far more interesting time reading Variety's detailed account of the collapse of Brash Entertainment. It's pretty awesome stuff in a very schadenfreude way. I say that as someone who had to play the Jumper game.

The only really interesting releases this week is a new adventure game called A Vampyre Story from one of the creators of classic Lucasarts adventure games The Dig and Curse of Monkey Island. I really like the look, especially of the main character (pictured). And any game that can use the phrases "crazy hearse fun ride" and "fin de siècle" in the same trailer gets a thumbs-up from me (check out the trailer here).

Sadly, I'm less of a "PC only holdout" and more of a "I don't have a TV and can't afford that AND a console" loser. However, what strikes me as the really annoying aspect of GTA IV PC is the way it requires two processes running in the background in addition to the game.

I'm pretty indifferent to most DRM discussions, but is anyone else getting annoyed at how many different programs publishers and developers are trying to load into our system trays? I have Steam for most games, and that works pretty well. But if I want to play a Stardock game (and who doesn't?), I have to load up Impulse and let that run.

Now for GTA IV, I have to run GFW Live and Rockstar Social Club. I'm starting to foresee a future where every other game will require a new launcher / downloader / authenticator application, and I am awash in scraps of paper with usernames, login codes, passwords, and and CD keys.

I hear you, brother! It's enough to make a guy stick with Xbox Live. :)

Ah, but Impulse doesn't need to be running. It's just there to download and authenticate your Stardock software - once.

My wallet is decimated after Black Friday.

No kidding. Amazon pretty much single-handedly sucked me dry. Their sales all weekend were just murderously difficult to resist. There were one or two other good deals - GoGamer, Gamefly - but Amazon had 'em beat cold.
