Free Lord of the Rings Online weekend in effect

LOTRO_free_weekend_02.jpgSo what are you doing this weekend? Wait, before you answer, let me guess. You're playing Lord of the Rings Online to take advantage of the free "Welcome Back" offer extended to former subscribers? Was I close? Because if you've ever had a paid subscription to the game, you can go here to download the client and then play for free between now and midnight Monday.

Now if you're not a former player, I know what you're thinking. "Gee, Tom, I really want to play Lord of the Rings Online, but I don't know if I can get to level 50 in time for the Mines of Moria expansion later this month." Well, you're probably right. But you will get a bonus of 25% to all experience points you earn for killing monsters between now and the November 18th release, so you'll be that much closer. And even if you're not ready to actually go into Moria once the expansion comes out, you can still start leveling one of the two new character classes. I'm sure the Free Peoples will need Wardens and Runekeepers in Moria at some point.

If, on the other hand, you're one of those people playing World of Warcraft this weekend to get ready for next week's Wrath of the Lich-King expansion, well, carry on. But let me just point out that World of Warcraft doesn't have Nazguls.

Well, no, I'm not. Because the thing that all of these free weekend type offers neglect to remember is that these are honking huge games that have no reason to stay on my hard drive once I decide to cancel my subscription. By the time I'd have the client all downloaded, installed, and patched up, my free weekend would be half over. Even if I knew ahead of time, that's still an enormous pain in the ass and I'm just never up for it. I quit these games for reasons.

Anyway, I'm still hooked on ye olde Warhammer Online.
