Atari releases one Neverwinter Nights expansion pack, remains mum on another

NWN2_Zehir.JPGThis week, Atari released Storm of Zehir, the second official expansion for Neverwinter Nights 2, the massively flexible Dungeons & Dragons game with a thousand downloadable player-made adventures, some of which aren't even terrible. Storm of Zehir adds a nonlinear campaign with a new system of overland travel. Rather than the usual Neverwinter Nights MO of a single playable character and a passel of NPC henchmen, the expansion is to be played with a party of four playable characters.

This is all good and well, but it makes me wonder whatever happened to the Mysteries of Westgate "adventure pack" that Atari was going to publish a year ago? Westgate was created by Ossian Studio, a small independent team made from a former developer from the Baldur's Gate games and a team of accomplished Neverwinter Nights modders. A year ago, Ossian finished Mysteries of Westgate. It was wrapped up and ready to be released as a paid download. I know this, because I actually played it for a while at a press event Atari held to promote the game.

But the adventure pack was never released. The last official statement was that it had to be adapted to Atari's new copy protection system. That copy protection was introduced in June, but there was no sign of Mysteries of Westgate. The continued delay remains unexplained and there's still no scheduled release date.

But, hey, how about that Storm of Zehir?
