I've seen plenty of silly boss battles in my time. But this week's Spider-Man: Web of Shadows takes the cake. This being a Marvel comics mash-up, you meet Wolverine half-way into the game. Naturally, you start fighting. It would be a pretty boring game if the two of just went out for a coffee or watched a game. You eventually wear down enough of Wolverine's hit points that he jumps away and the game cuts to a cutscene view.
At this point, I expected one of Web of Shadow's silly button pressing minigames, which are forgiving and rare enough that I don't mind them. But Wolverine wasn't having any of that. He had something else in mind. He posed questions about Marvel comics lore. I had to choose one of four answers using the controller buttons.
Wolverine wanted to know where he met so-and-so, who won the battle between this superhero and that superhero, the names of Spidey's parents, what such-and-such's real name was, and where certain events happened. I'm not a big comic book guy, so I didn't have the first clue about any of this stuff. I suppose I could have told Wolverine to wait a sec while I checked Wikipedia, but I wanted to play evil Spidey. And most of the questions had an obvious evil Spidey answer. I just chose those. Although I got one right by accident.
So let this be a warning. If you want to be buddies with Wolverine, bone up on your Marvel comics lore.

The Marvel trivia was one of my favorite bits of Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Then again, it was a side game and not a boss battle. I don't know how I would have fared if it had been.
Oh, who am I kidding? I would have KILLED.
