Capcom issued a modertately frantic "oops" regarding the PC version of MotoGP 08, the motorcycle racing game that anyone who cares about is probably playing on the 360 or PS3 instead.Capcom regrets to inform consumers who have recently purchased the PC version of MotoGP 08 that we have just identified a technical issue with the PC version of the game. This issue only happens with MotoGP 08 PC when installing the game to a custom location on a hard drive; This issue does not affect the default installation, as it only occurs when the destination location has been changed.
No word on what this actually does, but it reminds me of a couple of classic install blunders. When you installed the original Half-Life, it also put onto your computer some puffery called Sierra Utilities. Some people found out that uninstalling Sierra Utilities nuked the contents of their entire hard drives.
Here are the details from a helpful poster on PCUser.com:When Sierra Utilities was written, some GOOSE assumed that no-one would change the install location for the program. He (or she) then went on to make the ridiculous mistake of hard-coding the uninstall routine to remove the parent directory when [the] program was uninstalled. If that parent directory is anything other than C:\sierra then you can kiss goodbye to whatever else is in it.
The same thing happened a year later in Myth 2.
Ah, good times. Us old-school PC users laugh in the face of you console gamers with your Red Rings of Death.
