I'm not sure which is an more odious idea: Rush Hour director Brett Ratner doing a Guitar Hero movie or producer Mark Burnett doing a Rock Band reality TV show. While the former is just Ratner shooting the breeze with an interviewer, the latter seems like it's actually in development.
Variety noticed a Craig's List ad looking for people in the Los Angeles area to audition for an official MTV Rock Band 2 show. They're advertising for groups of four, who first have to send in pictures, of course. The implication is that you have to be, well, kind of mainstreamy:
We want to know what sets you apart from everyone else (fire fighters, sororities, fraternities, military, etc..!
I noticed that "being a dork plays a lot of Rock Band" is conspicuously absent from that list of people set apart.
As for what sort of show it'll be, the current version of the listing only mentions MTV, but an earlier version quoted by Variety began with, "The creator of ‘Rock Star’ and ‘The Apprentice,’ Mark Burnett and MTV bring you the first show based on the new game ‘Rock Band 2’".

wow! every time you think reality tv cant amaze you with one offering, they amaze you more with the next. this may be the most mind blowing combination of product placement and generic reality show ever. i'm scared tom. hold me.

Bad idea. We don't want new bands that know how to play old songs really well. So, unless whoever wins becomes the new Monkeys, where they're people who know how to play instruments and perform, but the studio writes all their material, my advice is to just leave the whole thing alone.
