Force Unleashed is a pretty terrible game, and I can't recommend playing it. It's sloppy and underdone, with a surprising number of glitches for a AAA release from a big publisher. However, it is also the best bit of Star Wars writing since the 80s, and it opens with the scene above. That's easily one of my favorite Star Wars images since John Dykstra (?) matted a second sun onto footage of Mark Hamill gazing out over Tunisia at dusk.
For the full story without having to play the messy game, you can watch these YouTube videos of Force Unleashed's cutscenes. These are also helpful for those of us who played the game and had to watch unblinkingly for the stupid button-presses during the quick-time minigames while cool cutscenes played in the background.

Yeah, during the QTEs I'm too focused on watching for the button presses to watch what actions Starkiller is actually performing.
Fail.

Tom,
I am currently playing the game. I agree with the Gameinformer Magazine's review of the game. Using the Force is fun, but some other issues like targeting issues is annoying. You mention several glitches, could you perhaps elaborate a little more on them? I would like to see if I have come across those as well. Thanks.

Very best of the star wars writing since the 80s? Thats a very broad statement. You're ignoring the Thrawn series by Timothy Zahn, all of the various other books and comic books, quite a few of which are excellent, kotor (which won awards) and the clone wars cartoon series (not the movie which, btw, had a cross dressing hutt, wtf?). I haven't finished the game yet, but it hasn't impressed me so far as much as some other things have.

If you want to enjoy The Force Unleashed, switch the difficulty to easy and then just breeze through.

If the most enjoyable part of the game is the story, isn't posting these links tantamount to posting a link to a torrent of the game? It's not like the cutscenes aren't copyrighted, and it's not like they didn't cost Lucasarts money to make.

Thanks for posting this link, Tom. Because it really is a third rate game with a first-rate facade stapled on top of it. The demo was OK, but not great. I think the stupid AT-ST walker at the end of the demo was too telling--lots of crapp in store for the constant reader (that's what Stephen King calls his stupid marks these days--I'm one of them).
I agree, this was pretty good "writing"--mainly because they've really lowered that bar since 1983. While perhaps Timothy Thrawn's pulp was good reading at the time ("he's the guy who took down Vader"), it's hardly Ivanhoe. I don't recall ever returning to re-read any of his stuff.
While I had misgivings (at first) for burning the bridge and just watching the cutscenes (now it's too spoilered to play), the first time the stupid "hit the X button now" thing leaked into the youtube videos, I felt vindicated. Shame on LucasArts for failing to deliver AAA goods. Shame shame.
If Rockband 2 hadn't been there 2 days earlier, using the force to lift ninety bucks out of my wallet (for wireless drums) after I bought RB2 *and* GH3 (I needed a guitar peripheral), they might have had a chance.

I found those videos to be incredibly bittersweet. Episode 2 strangled whatever remained of my enthusiasm for the series, but this really reminded me of everything I loved about Star Wars. And the writing and acting in the game put all the prequels to shame, although that's hardly a literary or thespian feat.
I am in total agreement with Caelwyn about Timothy Zahn's series. The Star Wars universe as portrayed in the movies really didn't have anything like the depth or interest that it eventually acquired through Timothy Zahn's work. Grand Admiral Thrawn was a truly great character, and the Holmes and Watson dynamic between him and Captain Pallaeon was delightful.
Maybe someday the Star Wars franchise will be cool again. The cutscenes from this game give me hope that LucasArts might eventually see fit to build first-rate games again (although the future looks grim).

I'm playing it right now and, I gotta say, I'm actually enjoying it. Maybe it's because I'm a hardcore STAR WARS fan and I'll eat up anything having to do with it...but I'm really quite surprised at how much I'm enjoying it, after reading all the negative reviews. It's about as good as any other STAR WARS game before it. I'm having a blast playing it. I do agree with this article's opinion that the story is very good, however. The voice-acting, as well. I'm totally immersed in this game.
