Age of Conan patched and ditched in the same week

Conan_PvP_update.jpgThis week saw two dramatic and simultaneous developments for Age of Conan, the struggling fantasy MMO. In the lastest patch, developer Funcom finally added the PvP (player vs. player) system, which was supposed to be one of the game's big selling points when it launched last spring. It's almost a cruel joke that the patch comes out at the same time as Warhammer Online, another fantasy MMO slickly built around PvP combat.

But on the same day the patch went live, the game's creative director all but threw down his hat and stormed out of the building. Age of Conan game director and Funcom co-founder Gaute Godager told Gamesindustry.biz:

I have done my very best making this fabulous game, but I have concluded there are elements which I am dissatisfied with. I have decided to act on this, and as a result I have chosen to leave Funcom.
That's pretty dramatic in an industry where people normally "pursue other interests".
