Siren episode 12: sayonara, sucker

Siren_game_diary_12.jpgAnd so Siren screeches to an inglorious end. After 11 episodes of mostly middling gameplay interspersed with intriguing storytelling, the twelfth episode has effectively killed the game for me, leaving me with no desire to get to the end. Episode 12 ambushes you with a series of boss fights unlike anything you've played in Siren up to now. And that's not a good thing.

First, you have to fight a boss monster by running around precarious ledges, plucking up bits of the environment, and throwing them while locked in place. Did Siren not get the memo that it makes a lousy action game? Then you have to defend someone from swarming shibito with no clear indication where they're coming from or even where they're going. This one took me at least ten tries, and I only beat it by taking advantage of a cheap exploit I found online. And then you're dropped into a toe-to-toe gun battle pitting your clunkly slow-firing ineffectual hunting rifle against someone else insta-kill shotgun.

This most recent situation I've tried well over fifteen times to no avail. And by checking the goals, it seems that there's yet another boss battle after this one. No thanks. Goodbye, Siren. All this way and this is the thanks I get? I have no spoiler discussions, because, frankly, I don't care about the storyline any further. Let's just say the butler did it and be done with it.

Why do dev's insist on doing this. I felt Assassians Creed did the same thing. Sailing along having a great time with the game, and they toss in an impossible level. I hate this.

That is one of the problems with a lot of horror titles. The designers make sections that are hard because the controls are so poor for the game that it erases any sense of terror and the player is just annoyed at the mechanics. Were the designers smart enough to make the game checkpoint after each annoying section, or after dieing you have to start the whole thing over again?

It's the last episode and you expect things to be the same as before? Lame. Play any video game and you'll find that the last episode is always the most difficult part of the game. You either haven't played many video games or just not used to ramped up difficulty in video games.

Yeah, take that Tom, you noob.
