Ninjas and pirates promised in Lego Universe

lego.jpgNow that the whole Sasquatch thing has been cleared up (spoiler: it was a hoax), it's time to move on to a bigger mystery: What's the deal with Lego Universe, the upcoming Lego-themed massively multiplayer online game in which players, um, build stuff with Legos, I think?

Mostly what we know is that it's being created by Colorado developer Netdevil, whose previous games were Auto Assault and Jumpgate. Neither is still alive. Hopefully Netdevil has figured out by now what not to do. We also know that they invited a bunch of engineering types to come bang on an early build of their game. Here's a video that does almost nothing to clear up exactly what Lego Universe will be.

The idea seems to be that players get together and make the game's content for the developers. In other words, Second Life but with an IP. Based on the concept art above, the guys at Netdevil seem to think players are going to make tentacled Lego creature that crash into Lego cities and are contained by Lego hazmat teams. Which is all good and well, but I hope they'll be paying attention to Spore in two weeks when an avalanche of penises comes tumbling through the internet. Or they can just come over to my house and check out some of the custom car art I've downloaded for Forza 2.

Near the end of the video, one of the developers finally makes some concrete promises:

You're gonna see pirates, you're gonna see ninjas, you're gonna see robots, you're going to see underwater stuff, you're gonna see city things.
Then a German fellow enthuses, "Everything is possible." As if suddenly understanding what he's just predicted, he adds, "I hope so."
