First look at the world of Warhammer Online

WHO_01 (20).jpgIt's just under a month away from the launch of Warhammer Online, the new massively multiplayer online RPG from Mythic, the folks who made Dark Age of Camelot. Way back in the Dark Ages of MMOs, back in the ancient year 2001, back when they weren't even a gleam in Electronic Arts' eye, Mythic was doing large scale player vs. player (PvP) battles. And they were doing it right, setting three factions against each other in bona fide battles and sieges rather than deathmatch-style skirmishes. Mythic has since been acquired by EA and put to work on the Warhammer license, which is essentially World of Warcraft before it was World of Warcraft.

In other words, this is a rare combination of a rich license with an established and talented developer. The last time we got a combination this good was Lord of the Rings Online.

Below are some screenshots from each of the six races' starting areas. Yes, it looks an awful lot like World of Warcraft. Get used to it. At first blush, it might even seem to play like World of Warcraft. But the basic difference in Warhammer Online is that it seems to lead you into playing with and against other people rather than just whacking insentient monsters. To be sure, there's plenty of that, too. But the world of Warhammer Online funnels player's efforts into clashing with the other races, first by encouraging players to work together on public quests, then by putting them into scenarios against AI monsters, and finally by moving quests out into the wider wild world of PvP.

I'll post more info as the beta progresses, but for now, enjoy the scenery.

You sure that's not World of Warcraft?!?

I guess if you can't beat 'em, copy 'em.

The UI is a complete ripoff of Blizzard's WoW. EA might want to be careful before the final release. If I was Blizzard, I'd sue the hell out of EA for this.

I dont even play wow and i thought this was it. Sheesh you would think they could at least have better graphics than wow. This is the year 2008 and those are so 2005 rofl

By fiction at 7:35 PM ON 08/19/08

guys i see that some of you are a fan of wow but never forget blizzard also accepts that they had inspired from warhammer to create warcraft and starcraft years ago. Surely the they'll use the same ui bec when you look at anarchy or eve can you play it clearly i think not :)

If anyone actually cares, Warhammer came out a long long time before Warcraft. GDW has a better case against Blizzard than the other way around.

I didn't know Blizzard was releasing a new WoW update!

For the guy who said Warhammer came before Warcraft. Yes, but Warhammer wasn't a computer game to begin with. Warcraft's UI is all its own. So just b/c Warcraft was inspired by Warhammer doesn't mean that it has a claim on the UI.

you know the bad thins is warcraft actually stole warhammers idea and to top it off made a game about it but what really sucks is their using such crappy graphics for it

oh well its ganna be a peice of shit pc game just like warcraft to me and i build warhammer models

For those of you who don't know - the graphics represented here are beta which are scaled back to the minimum/average setting while testing is going on.

By Alalxul at 12:14 PM ON 08/20/08

Sounds to me like a buncha ranting WoW junkies are scared of a new game. IMO the graphics are much better than WoW and the fact that it will be more PvP based is alot more enticing to me.PvP is and always will be > Pve.So you WoW addicts should go outside get a fresh breath of air and Prepare, looks like Blizz has an ample competetor on the way...I know I might get rid of my blizz acount...might not even bother with a deathknight.Keep up the good work EA and you have a "convert"

By Merrick at 5:38 AM ON 09/27/08

sorry but blizz does not have any competition, it still ranks number 1 by a long shot and the fact that many many many ppl i know that tried it, including myself went straight back to wow.

war does not stand up to the hype everyone made. To me it was like Lotr online.

Im not saying war is a bad game, but it still dosent compare

By lukitzu at 8:50 AM ON 12/18/08

warcraft dident steal anything wow has been around for like 10 years or so. how can wow copy any thing they had the first pc game. itz like DND a.k.a dungeons& dragons old school thats been around for centuries longer then warhammer. i think war hammer is a tootle rip of pretty much exactly the same but no where near as good. if i was blizzard id be kick'n some ass .i pity warhammer they should of came up with there own idea.

WOW and Warhammer are both addictive games. People sometimes are unable to define reality from not, that's what you call addiction. You can't just blame it to games, there are several media that can be addictive, there's TV, music and real drugs (which the society hasn't eliminated successfully). Sad thing the game is played the other way around. It was supposed to entertain you during your free time but it turned out it's becoming a problem for some. Keep enjoying the game, but live a real life ^^
