The Witcher: Enhanced Edition is a little bit better

witcher.jpgWhat: A re-release of last year's RPG, but this time with a better inventory interface, some re-recorded dialogue with presumably better voice actors, and NPCs with randomized parts so you're not adventuring in a world of clones. You'll get all this in a patch if you already own The Witcher, but you'll miss out on this release's "collector's edition" goodies.

Who: CD Projekt, the same developers who made the game

Where: PC only

When: September

Why: If you haven't played The Witcher, now you can without having to deal with what must have been a pretty painful inventory.

It wasn't an amazing inventory system, but just offhand I can name quite a few other, higher-profile games with worse. Mass Effect, Diablo II, Titan Quest, hell, any game that makes you juggle differently sized objects in a grid inventory - and there have been so very many in the years post-Diablo. Just for starters.

Its primary sin was that it made you deal with a lot of small icons all at once. Well, and that it really wanted you to have both a lot of alchemical ingredients and a lot of finished potions on hand most of the time, and it didn't really have the room to accomodate that.

The Enhanced Edition has an autosort for the inventory that neatly arranges and stacks everything. It also has all the potion stuff in a separate display (I don't know if they were mixed in with the general inventory, but if so, that must have been a huge pain). There are also filters for the potion stuff and new indicators showing exactly when you need if you don't have all the ingredients for a given potion.

As they were showing me these features, I couldn't help but think how annoying it must have been to play The Witcher without them.
