The Today Show makes Konami's Rock Revolution look frickin' sweet

today_show.jpgThe drawback of going mainstream is that the Today Show talks about you.

They did a short segment on Rock Band 2, which for some reason included talking to a dude who said, "[Rock Band] came out Thanksgiving 2007 and I've been playing it nonstop ever since." Of course, he wasn't playing it as he said this, thereby invalidating what he said. Looks like the fact checker at Today had the day off.

The segment succeeds in making Rock Band look like a singularly unfun experience. The people who seem to be having the most fun are random folks at some bar holding drinks. I'm not sure what they have to do with Rock Band, but I hope Today uses them for coverage of other games. A segment on, say, Civilization IV that shows game footage and then occasionally cuts to some drunk dude going 'Whoooo!' into the camera.

But that's not the worst of it. The Today Show hosts then play "Living on a Prayer", on easy, and they're terrible at it. It's like watching your parents try to play a videogame. Matt Lauer eventually tries to put a stop to the whole mess while Meredith Vieira shrieks Bon Jovi lyrics into a mic that drowns out the actual music from the game. "Let's go to Willard Scott," Lauer says. I never thought I'd be grateful to hear those words.

i enjoy watching people embarrass themselves as much as the next person. its why we watch and enjoy car crashes. isnt fun watching the today people leach off things instead of reporting real news.

Rumor is that after the performance, the developers were being thanked by the publishers for the 'no-fail' mode.

Although Al Roker looked comfortable on the drums.
