Singing blobs from Japan returning to the PSP

patapon_image.JPGMaybe you're bored with the current selection of PSP games. So you go online to see what's coming out. And you see that the new releases section for the PSP is a barren wasteland dotted with the detritus of occasional multiplatform licensing tie-ins.

But that's because you don't read Japanese. Kevin Gifford at 1up doesn't have this problem, so he's able to cull some excellent news from Famitsu Weekly, the premiere videogaming magazine in Japan, where they love videogames so much that their premiere videogaming magazine is published weekly. Here in the US, we can barely keep our videogaming magazines from shutting down.

The good news from Famitsu by way of Gifford's mad Japanese reading skillz is that there's a sequel to Loco Roco on the way. This adorable 2D platformer about singing blobs was one of the best reasons to own a PSP last September.

Actually, Patapon wasn't really a platformer. I have no idea what to call it, but I can't even say the name "patapon" without that beat pulsing pleasantly through my head for days to come. You could say it was a rhythm-based real time strategy game. Whatever you call it, it was one of those once-in-a-lifetime games that will sadly slip by unnoticed for many people. Fortunately, with a sequel on the way, it could be a twice-in-a-lifetime games.

In fact, I realize now I've made a terrible mistake. When I made my list of Best Games of the Half-Year, I totally spaced on Patapon. Can I call takebacks and replace, say, Lost Winds with Patapon? It's so easy to forget handheld games when you're talking about real games.
