Left 4 Dead box art is all in the thumbs

left-4-dead_box.jpgI'm not sure if zombies without opposable thumbs are more scary or less scary. The question is raised by Valve's box art for their upcoming zombie-shooter. On one hand, missing extremities are pretty gross. On the other hand, zombies without opposable thumbs won't be able to turn doorknobs, use tools, or hitchhike.

Also, it's kind of cute how Valve went with a Rating Pending tag for the ESRB rating on the box mock-ups. Raise your thumb if you think Left 4 Dead isn't going to be M-rated.

Hey, velociraptors only have three digits and they can open doors!

It's interesting that the ESRB/game industry allows blood splats in advertising. The MPAA doesn't. In fact, blood is turned black in "general audience" trailers, and they rejected the poster for one of the SAW movies that had a severed finger as the primary image.

Maybe that's not blood. Maybe the zombie was fingerpainting.

You're actually not allowed in any advertising whatsoever to "guess" at your ESRB rating even if it's obvious what you'll get. If you haven't gotten an official rating yet, you're required to go with RP.
